First Love's Return Line

The first notification Cheng Junyu received after arriving in Huihai was the local weather forecast, warning residents to prepare for a hot, dry summer with little rain.

Bored at the airport, he tapped the notification. A news broadcast from Huihai Radio came up. The male host's voice was steady and familiar. Cheng Junyu glanced down and saw a name that was even more familiar.

Xia Minghe.

What a coincidence. It was his ex-boyfriend, the one he'd had such an ugly breakup with.

Cheng Junyu was sure Huihai and he were incompatible by fate, so he dragged his suitcase away. And, as luck would have it, the suitcase that had survived so many trials gave up on him right then, spilling its contents all over the floor.

One plastic box held a model Cheng Junyu had finished assembling not long ago. It rolled a long way before a kind stranger picked it up.

"Thank you. Sorry to trouble you..."

He didn't finish. Cheng Junyu stared at the expressionless man before him, so startled he felt as if he'd seen a ghost.

Xia Minghe crouched down and put the model into his open suitcase. "No need to thank me," he said, then walked away without looking back.

The summer eight years ago was rainy and humid. Drenched through and sneezing nonstop, Cheng Junyu complained to Xia Minghe, "The weather forecast here is totally inaccurate."

Xia Minghe watched the ginger tea simmer on the stove and said nothing.

Cheng Junyu went on, "Hey, why don't you study meteorology and become a weather forecaster?"

Xia Minghe said, "Okay."
