Fireworks and Summer at Inarizaki

Whenever people mention Inarizaki, they always think of the summer that belonged to Inarizaki.

Summer, fireworks, and foxes.

Sometimes you find yourself wishing time would slow down a little, slow enough for sunlight to filter through the sheer curtains and spill across the well-worn desk, slow enough to spend an entire afternoon daydreaming in the corridor washed in evening light, slow enough to watch the clouds overhead change from rice balls into foxes.

High school doesn't last long.

But it carries the smell of heat and the sweat you throw yourself into, as you make it through the scorching height of summer.

An afternoon at Inarizaki, with sunlight heating the corridor until it burns.

You lean against the window and squint. All you have to do is look up, and the volleyball gym comes into view.

Even from far away, it seems you can hear the muffled heartbeat coming from that stuffy gym.

You once asked them,

"Isn't volleyball boring?"

You don't know much about volleyball, and can't quite understand why anyone would give it their all.

Their answers were different,

but they all meant the same thing.

"It's not boring."

"Volleyball is fun, because I love it."

That's right.

You suddenly remember those days when you couldn't understand volleyball, watching them sweat as they played.

It was precisely because of those figures

Because you loved it.

You think that was probably the moment you fell in love with volleyball, too.

You love watching them play, every afternoon, every summer.
