Yin Can opened his eyes and found himself standing on the stage at a small fan meeting. His former bandmate Shen Yicheng, now a stranger to him, looked as fresh and youthful as ever, gazing at him with sincere eyes as he made a heartfelt promise of "forever": "Happy seventeenth birthday, A Can. This is the fourth birthday we've celebrated together. I'm sure we'll always be the best of friends. Even if we lose our way, we'll meet again."
The fans' screams left Yin Can completely bewildered.
He managed to dig up this memory from the deepest corner of his mind: What the fuck, what a ghost story.
He seemed to have gone back... thirteen years.
They became trainees together at thirteen and debuted in a group at fifteen, rising from obscurity to the top.
They had once been the closest of friends.
Then one conflict after another erupted. They fought constantly, and after Yin Can and Shen Yicheng fell out, they stopped speaking and only joked around with their other bandmates. Their ship was hugely popular within the group, so they forced themselves to play along for the cameras when work demanded it. Off camera, they treated each other like air. Even looking at the other was enough to give them nightmares.
After they pursued separate careers, the group existed in name only. They stopped seeing each other on camera, and gradually lost contact in private, too.
It was true that they had once been closer than anyone. It was also true that they eventually drifted apart.
Growing up with Shen Yicheng and working hard together after their debut felt like something from a past life to Yin Can.
He never imagined that after one night's sleep, he'd see his underage former bandmate sincerely promising him "forever."
Yin Can: Words like "a lifetime" and "forever," which only bring people trouble, should be removed from the dictionary.
If he hadn't once truly believed in that nonsense about "forever," they wouldn't have hurt each other so fearlessly, or parted so bitterly that they never spoke again.
And yet... Yin Can gazed at Shen Yicheng, lost in thought.
--I'd forgotten. You used to look at me like this.
The future versions of them truly were sick of each other, but the versions they used to be had truly wanted to spend their lives together.
Reborn and reunited after breaking up, making up for the regrets of youth.
You are my friend who was always more than a friend, yet now feels like a stranger.
