Bai Xiaochen is a not-so-famous uploader in the crosstalk scene.
Because of his name, he has to explain every time that although his given name is Xiaochen, his surname is Bai, and his mother isn't surnamed Chen either.
As a college student, besides gaming, he likes recording videos of handsome guys' dorm life, then adding a stand-up comedy bit and uploading the edited video to Bilibili. It's a casual side gig that he doesn't take too seriously. Every so often a video gets over ten thousand views, but most get a few thousand, earning him a little pocket money to improve his life.
Bai Xiaochen is incredibly proud of this: At nineteen, I've managed to make fifty yuan a month as a half-baked content creator. I'm free to buy spicy strips!
It took him over two years, from the summer after his final year of high school to his sophomore year of college, to scrape together twenty thousand followers. Since he still hadn't gone viral, he figured he probably wasn't cut out for this.
Then he got a private message asking if he was interested in joining a show called Handsome Guys Rap.
Bai Xiaochen thought, "That doesn't sound like a serious show at all," but he quickly replied: Are you covering the flights?
The other person answered: We'll cover the hotel too.
So Bai Xiaochen agreed right away. Taking more than three seconds to think would be disrespectful to free flights and lodging.
The show required contestants to live together in isolation, so Bai Xiaochen recorded a farewell video for his fans. He was utterly self-important and smug as he announced in advance, "To all my dear fans, I have some huge news for you! I'm going on a rap variety show. I'm going from a two-thousand-follower nobody who works himself to the bone coming up with jokes and editing videos, to a rising new star with 2.08 million followers!"
He rushed to the venue, full of hopes of reaching the pinnacle of life, only to discover, to his shock, that the competition started with 300 contestants fighting for 50 spots. He could very well be sent straight back home.
There was good news, too: the four mentors invited by the production team were all top-tier stars. They were:
One of Q Music's three biggest stars, aka the one who sang "Who Didn't Have You in Their Youth": Chen Luyao.
The standout center from the first generation of idol competition shows, now still the undisputed king of traffic: Shen Youjia.
The actor who went from being in an ignored boy band for three years to becoming a celebrated star in modern romance dramas: Wen Jiashu.
The popular top member, rapper, and youngest member of a newly famous boy band: Duan Youen.
#Rap show story, 1v1 official pairing tentatively Duan Youen; everyone else has one-sided crushes on him. Everyone's favorite.
