Ever since the Pyro Archon completely defeated the Abyss, Natlan has known no more wars, and the way its people live has changed considerably. The most obvious change is education.
No longer bound to their tribes, children can choose their own paths once they have learned the basics.
And even in peacetime, Natlan still longs for heroes. For the inheritors of Ancient Names, though, this may not be a good thing.
At least, it certainly is for Man Gui, an ordinary girl who inherited the Ancient Name "Cauterizing Flame."
Under the expectant gazes of everyone around her, Man Gui, born among the Scions of the Canopy, unhesitatingly chose the Masters of the Night-Wind when it came time to pick her path.
After all, as the saying goes, a Scion of the Canopy who doesn't want to weave scrolls isn't a proper shut-in girl.
Of course, the bigger reason was that as long as she could sleep sitting up, she could tell anyone who asked that she was meditating.
Even Citlali, a fellow shut-in, couldn't stand watching her any longer. She forcibly hauled Man Gui to her feet and tossed her out into the wilderness to investigate the recent changes in the leylines.
Being the dutiful student she was, Man Gui naturally didn't refuse. Once she found a leyline, she promptly sat down on the spot and went to sleep.
Who knew how much time had passed when the Ancient Name she carried with her suddenly stirred. Startled, Man Gui opened her eyes at once and found six ghosts in front of her.
The face floating at the very front was far too familiar to all of Natlan.
"Ajaw, how did you die?"
Kinich, who had just been thrown out of the Night Kingdom: ?
*
As the inheritor of "Cauterizing Flame," Kinich had long expected his own death.
Perhaps because the Abyss no longer exerted its influence, he faded much more slowly in the Night Kingdom. Thanks to this, Kinich met other people and learned from them about all the changes Natlan had undergone.
Gradually, more and more familiar faces appeared. In the end, only the six of them remained.
Just as he was about to fade away, the Night Kingdom was shaken by a disturbance. When Kinich opened his eyes again, he found himself in some ruins.
The Ancient Name that had once belonged to him was floating between him and an unfamiliar girl.
"Are you the new inheritor of 'Cauterizing Flame'?"
This was a journey destined to end in farewell. With the power of the leylines, they briefly returned to the world of the living, witnessed Natlan's tomorrow, and then departed once more.
"Kinich, among all the inheritors of 'Cauterizing Flame,' you were the only one to experience both war and peace. After the war ended, how did you find your purpose?"
"Kinich, you are my past, my ideal, and the road ahead of me."
In this age that once belonged to you, and now belongs to us, I will remember you, inherit what you left behind, and finally forget you.
Just some stories about ordinary people.
1. Kinich pairing. Apologies in advance if anyone feels out of character.
2. This is a tragic ending! A tragic ending!! A tragic ending!!! Important things must be said three times!
3. Inspired by the story after the 5.2 plot ended. If it doesn't match later canon, consider it my own headcanon.
4. Although the setting is Natlan, many things are different from the original work. They're all my own headcanon.
