In the tenth year of the apocalypse, thick fog has swallowed most of the Earth, spawning monsters devoid of reason. Trapped humanity has banded together of its own accord, establishing countless safe zones beyond the fog.
To survive, eighteen-year-old Li Xiu is forced to leave the safe zone in search of supplies.
Luckily, he doesn’t encounter any danger along the way.
But when he returns, he discovers that the place where he grew up has already been swallowed by the fog.
And in the pale mist stands a monster.
Much later, Li Xiu wakes up to find himself in an unfamiliar cave.
The monster is crouched nearby, its pitch-black eyes fixed on his face. Beastlike, broken words rumble from its throat.

Li Xiu realizes the monster is strange. It doesn’t kill him. Instead, it goes out every day to bring him food.
Though it’s always raw meat, dripping with blood.
The monster also often presses Li Xiu’s palm with its hands, which have sharp claws, and repeatedly croons “maomao.”
Li Xiu gets annoyed. One day, he forcefully pulls his hand away.
But to his surprise, the moment he struggles, the monster gets excited and buries its face in his belly.
In an instant, Li Xiu loses control of his expression: “!”

After realizing that the monster is raising him as a cat, Li Xiu decides to teach it to speak and read.
The boy points to the words on the paper. “Li Xiu.”
The monster looks at him, confused. “?”
Li Xiu repeats sternly, “Repeat after me: Li-Xiu.”
Despite its strange, inhuman, all-black eyes, the monster looks at him with the doting affection of someone watching a kitten play with a ball of yarn.
It obediently says, “Li... xiu? Kitty?”
Li Xiu falls silent. “...”
Then he smacks the paper against the monster’s face, quick and hard.
