Blurb:
He Can is a hapless man chosen by misfortune. For the first twenty-odd years of his life, he was constantly plagued by monsters.
At first, it was just a shadow that often took center stage in his nightmares, waking He Can from a sound sleep. But after he went to college and got a roommate who was always by his side, the shadow's behavior began to grow unspeakable...
Someone he had just been talking to pleasantly in a dream could sprout wet tentacles the next second, touching every inch of He Can's body.
No matter what the dream was about, it always ended up as the set of a pornographic film.
After his roommate tactfully told him not to make strange noises in his sleep, He Can was forced to move out of the dorm and spent all four years of college on his own.
Then he met his current husband, Li Changzhou, and never dreamed of that monster again.
-
He Can's husband, Li Changzhou, was the most perfect person he had ever met: tall, gentle, handsome, rich, and devoted.
Apart from having a rather high sex drive, he was practically the perfect lover.
After He Can accepted Li Changzhou's confession, they quickly became inseparable, moved in together, and got married.
The monster in his dreams stopped appearing, replaced by his husband's gentle smile.
In the morning, He Can would wake to his husband's passionate kisses. At night, his husband would hold him tight until their bodies were pressed completely together, neither able to bear being apart.
This life continued until the day his husband's twin younger brother, Li Xun, returned from abroad.
The two had the same face, but their personalities were worlds apart.
The soup He Can made especially for his husband had to include a bowl for Li Xun. Any gift He Can bought for his husband had to come with one for Li Xun. The glass of milk He Can brought his husband before bed had to be accompanied by a glass for Li Xun.
Even in bed with his husband, Li Xun had to wedge himself in.
But he was his husband's younger brother, so He Can put up with it all.
Until one day, when his husband was away from home, Li Xun let his true colors show and pulled He Can into his arms.
"Sister-in-law knows that whatever my brother has, I have to have, too. But now my brother has a wife, while I'm all alone."
"How about you put up with a little inconvenience and be my wife, too?"
-
He Can began avoiding Li Xun.
Whenever Li Xun was home, He Can clung to Li Changzhou even more, just to minimize contact with his brother-in-law.
But this didn't last long, because his husband suddenly fell gravely ill and died in the second year of their marriage.
The Li family lost control of the company, and He Can became a widower.
-
He Can started dreaming again.
As if something had provoked it, the monster in his dreams tormented him more and more, day and night.
He Can began to fear going to sleep, because the next time he dreamed, the monster would only wrap itself around him more tightly.
He woke with a start, panic on his face, and was gathered into a broad, warm embrace.
"Sister-in-law, another nightmare?"
When he looked up, he saw Li Xun's face, identical to his late husband's.
Gradually, He Can realized that as long as he slept beside Li Xun, the monster in his dreams wouldn't appear.
So, swallowing his shame, he had to climb into his brother-in-law's bed every night.
-
On the day He Can accepted Li Xun's confession, he dreamed of his late husband's grave.
The monster that had disappeared for so long was perched atop the grave, its pitch-black, sticky body writhing grotesquely, its crimson eyes as red as blood.
The monster drew closer and closer to He Can.
It turned into his late husband.
