On a stormy day, at a convenience store by the school entrance.
The last umbrella has been bought. Shen Qing sits in the store, waiting for someone to pick her up.
As she idles, the sensor door opens.
A handsome young man with striking bone structure folds his umbrella and steps inside. He has a high nose, a well-proportioned back, and a clean, crisp presence like the rain.
He picks up a bottle of cold water and heads to the counter to pay.
From Shen Qing's angle, she can make out his slightly damp fringe and distinct features, as if drawn in ink.
Ignoring her boyfriend's message saying he'd be there soon, Shen Qing gets up and calls out before the young man leaves: "I don't have an umbrella. Could you take me with you?"
The young man turns down her suggestion that they share his umbrella.
But Shen Qing gets one of his umbrellas, and his name:
Chen Le.
The name rings a bell.
A first-year graduate student at the Engineering Institute, a prominent figure at Qing University, and the unattainable heartthrob secretly loved by countless people.
Plenty have pursued him, but no one has ever succeeded.
Shen Qing likes a challenge.
She wants to know what Chen Le's tall, straight figure will look like when he bends down before her and kneels.
So she wears him down, bit by bit, and really does tame him.
A favored son of heaven, a brilliant scholar with a string of degrees, he obeys her every word and wags his tail for her affection.
But the puppy is too clingy, and Shen Qing doesn't stay interested for long. After a few months, she casts him aside.

Until another stormy day.
Shen Qing kisses her new boyfriend goodbye downstairs, then turns to go up and sees Chen Le, soaked by the rain, waiting at the stairwell.
Stripped of all his former restraint and pride, he looks at her with wet eyes, wretched and broken.
Shen Qing's heart softens for a moment, and she lets him upstairs.
After they enter, she goes into the bathroom to get him a towel, but suddenly hears the lock click.
He steps inside, into the cramped space.
Behind him, the door is locked from the inside.
