Blurb: No one ever imagined that a country girl working as a nanny could enter a wealthy family in the capital and marry a leading scientist.
To be honest, Zhu Xin hadn’t imagined it either.
She was a modern-day wage slave, working late into the night just to earn enough to get by. She went to sleep one night and woke up in the sixties, an era of food shortages and threadbare clothes.
Her family lived in utter poverty. Her father and grandparents favored boys over girls, and she shared crowded quarters with several younger siblings.
The day Zhu Xin woke up, she was being dumped by the fiancé she’d been promised to since childhood, simply because he’d latched onto a rich, beautiful young woman whose father was an officer in the capital.
Knowing he was in the wrong, her former fiancé tried to appease the Zhu family. Besides offering money and an apology, he found Zhu Xin a job as a nanny in a wealthy household in the capital. It paid thirty or so yuan a month, nearly as much as a formal job in the city.
In an era when jobs were being cut and workers sent down to the countryside everywhere, a nanny earning that much was an unexpected windfall for the Zhu family. Without a second thought, Zhu’s father agreed.
What they didn’t know was that her former fiancé’s family had ulterior motives. One of the people Zhu Xin would have to care for was a man lying unconscious in bed, unable to eat, drink, or take care of his bodily needs without help.
This vegetative patient had an identity that could not be disclosed, and every member of his family was an ill-tempered weirdo.
His wife, who had studied in the Soviet Union, had died in childbirth, leaving behind a newborn baby who needed constant care.
As the family’s nanny, Zhu Xin would have to look after both an adult and a baby. She was in for a rough time.
Naturally, Zhu Xin didn’t believe in free lunches. But compared with staying in her rural hometown, doing nothing and battling a bunch of awful relatives, she’d rather pack her bags and go to the capital to work as a nanny. At least she could support herself with money she earned through her own efforts.
But when she saw the handsome man lying in bed, with a face straight out of a magazine, she was more than a little shocked.
It was him, one of the great scientists who had made tremendous contributions.
His name was known throughout the country. She had never imagined that the white-haired old man in the newspaper had been so young in this era.
She began caring for the great scientist without hesitation.
With her attentive care, the man, who had been bedridden for a long time, woke up in less than six months.
The first thing he said after waking was, in a hoarse voice like a broken gong from years of disuse, “When you bathe me, stop washing there. If you keep doing it, you’ll have to take responsibility.”
Zhu Xin: ...
It’s just part of my job. Why are you making such a fuss?
