Who Killed Me?

[Short Story]

"As 2,008 performers beat drums and sang, reciting, 'What a joy it is to welcome friends from afar,' we extended a warm welcome to Olympic athletes and guests from all over the world."

At 8:18 p.m. on August 8, 2008, I opened my eyes and heard the broadcast commentary on the Olympic opening ceremony.

"You can't see. You can't see."

A voice repeated itself in my mind.

The cramped attic, the smell of rotting furniture, and the radio still playing beside the bed.

"Son, you're awake?"

My parents, their temples streaked with gray, came through the door.

"Dad. Mom."

Their faces filled with joy and surprise. "You can see again?"

I never expected my sight to return so suddenly, and neither did my parents.

They decided to take me to a private doctor for a follow-up appointment.

But we had a car accident on the way there.

That was the first time I died.

When I opened my eyes again, it was still 8:18 p.m. on August 8, 2008.

"You can't see. You can't see."

That voice rang out again.

This time, my parents came in right on time and still decided to take me to the doctor.

I delayed our departure to prevent the accident.

But after my appointment, as I was leaving the clinic, I was suddenly struck hard.

That was the second time I died.

When I opened my eyes again, it was still 8:18 p.m. on August 8, 2008.

"You can't see. You can't see."

The voice came again.

This time, I didn't tell anyone that I could see.
