She Is Not My Friend

Su Han loves photography. She loves how photographs capture time, and making up stories in her head as she looks at them.

While her peers start talking about crushes and celebrities, sharing their first stirrings of young love, all Su Han can think about is how to squeeze more money out of her older sister to buy a good lens.

One day, she discovers that her older sister has taken her camera again without asking. Furious, she pushes open her sister's bedroom door. In the room, the curtains are drawn, and an unfamiliar woman is changing clothes.

Thick, black curls wrap around her slender waist. Her skin is luminous and as white as clotted milk.

When interrupted, the woman doesn't panic. She fixes her eyes on Su Han and pulls her shirt down from her chest. Her full breasts shift slightly beneath the fabric.

Su Han forgets how to speak.

"Little sister?" the woman asks with a smile.

That moment is never captured in a photograph. It stays forever in Su Han's mind.

She stands in the dimness, glowing in Su Han's memories.

Her youthful fantasies begin in earnest.

In every little bedtime story, there's a shadow of the same person.

During a university break, Ou Yi drives to pick Su Han up and take her home.

A classmate points at Ou Yi and asks Su Han in surprise, "Is that your friend?"

Su Han thinks for a moment, then shakes her head.

After the classmate leaves, Ou Yi looks at Su Han and asks with a smile, "Not your friend? Are we playing strangers-to-forced-lovers tonight?"

Su Han blushes and takes Ou Yi's hand.

You're not my friend.

You're my fantasy,

my first love, my secret crush, and the one I want for the rest of my life.
