One day, six months after Cheng Nian started suffering from insomnia, Lu Yizheng knocked on her door at one in the morning and said he was going to stay there.

"Are you insane, Lu Yizheng? You're showing up in your pajamas in the middle of the night to stay at your ex-girlfriend's place?"

Lu Yizheng sat down on her sofa without even looking at her.

He came out swinging.

"Severe sleep deprivation is messing with your brain. Your proposal is already two weeks late. If that stupid proposal of yours weren't holding everything up, do you think I'd come to this dump in the middle of the night to make sure you get some sleep?"

At university, they'd once been the enviable couple everyone admired.

But they were both hot-tempered and sharp-tongued. Neither wanted to give in; each wanted to prove they could move on more easily than the other.

When they broke up, Cheng Nian told him she was deleting all their contact information. They wouldn't see each other again anyway.

He said, Fine. We won't get back together in this lifetime anyway.

Cheng Nian never expected to run into him at work later and become his colleague.

They fought like the world was ending over their very first joint project, and came to work every day wearing sour expressions as if the other owed them eight million.

Later, after the project wrapped up, the company held a team outing.

They went on a trip to the mountains. The road was rough, and halfway there, their vehicle sprang an oil leak and they were forced to stop at the top of a snow-covered mountain. Cheng Nian's head was aching from the cold when...

Someone beside her handed her a scarf. She recognized the style at a glance.

It was the one she'd knitted for him when they were still together. She'd been twenty-two that year, dating for the first time, and had even embroidered a label onto the scarf.

Cheng Nian looked at the scarf.

She thought they were both idiots.
