Liu Zhai transmigrated into a book as the favorite minister of a ruler whose kingdom was doomed to fall. In the original story, his counterpart secretly built up his power, kept the emperor under house arrest, then killed him with a cup of poisoned wine and declared himself king.
That very night, Liu Zhai entered the emperor's bedchamber with the poisoned wine in hand. Behind layer upon layer of beaded curtains, Shang Yu held a wine cup, his phoenix eyes half closed as he smiled. "My beloved minister won't let me leave this palace, yet you never come to see me. You have kept me waiting far too long."
The ruler of a doomed kingdom was audacious and unrestrained, debonair and disdainful, and utterly imperious.
Liu Zhai said nothing. He dismissed the guards at the palace gates, then poured all the poisoned wine over Shang Yu, letting it run down his half-open collar.
His clothes turned translucent, and his gaze grew darker.
Liu Zhai's mission after he transmigrated into a book was to keep the doomed ruler alive without exposing his identity. If Shang Yu died, the transmigration would reset.
He secretly helped Shang Yu build up his power, made contact with the emperor's trusted allies, and helped him eliminate corrupt ministers and traitors.
After three resets, he finally managed to protect Shang Yu through the war and secure his position as regent.
He thought his mission was complete and he could rest easy. He never expected that Shang Yu's gentleness and timidity were only an act. Shang Yu had long since seen through his treacherous intentions, and Liu Zhai had already fallen into a series of traps.
Plotting rebellion and attempting to poison the emperor: crimes punishable by death.
The imperial guards dragged Liu Zhai into the dungeon, where he was to be executed at dawn.
But in the chaos of his fading consciousness, the emperor appeared in a pale gold dragon robe and personally unlocked the chains binding Liu Zhai's limbs.
"My beloved minister did me a great service by rooting out the rebels. How could they treat you this way?" Shang Yu said with an easy smile. "But I also know that the wine you poured over me back then was poisoned."
Liu Zhai's heart clenched.
"So, my regent..." Shang Yu leaned down to whisper, his long fingers brushing the trembling lips of the man beneath him. "How should I reward you, and how should I punish you?"
