I Lost Him

I Lost Him

Classical dancer Wen Yu (bottom) x Yan Chen, a mathematics professor. Teacher and student, five-year age gap.

Wen Yu first saw Yan Chen at the curtain call of the dance drama at his graduation gala.

The applause thundered from below, but Wen Yu's attention was drawn to the man sitting off to one side in the second row, eyes lowered as he held a pen, his fingers immaculate.

In that instant, the handsome scholar from the classical dance drama seemed to take shape, stepping slowly out of the script and appearing before him.

A graceful young gentleman, gentle as jade, peerless in his elegance.

Only later did he learn that the man was a professor in the university's School of Science, and that he had even skipped one of his classes before.

After graduation, Wen Yu pursued him relentlessly and finally won him over, only to make a complete mess of their relationship.

He was a womanizer, ruled by his emotions, and utterly unreasonable.

Yan Chen, on the other hand, was rational, conscientious, rigorous, and meticulous.

Wen Yu knew Yan Chen loved him with all his heart. He took shameless advantage of that affection, acting as outrageously as he pleased and believing Yan Chen would never leave him.

After one of the countless nights when Wen Yu came home dead drunk, he found the lights on, but Yan Chen nowhere to be seen.

It was as if Yan Chen had suddenly vanished from his world, without a trace.

-

Three years later, Wen Yu never expected to see Yan Chen again.

They passed each other, and Yan Chen gave him a faint nod, as though nothing had ever happened between them.

But Wen Yu didn't know that tucked inside Yan Chen's neatly arranged lesson plans was a laminated photograph.

In it, Wen Yu stood at center stage, smiling brightly.

Even when Yan Chen had decided to leave, he still remembered to leave a light on for Wen Yu, who was afraid of the dark.

[All he asked for was the lingering warmth of dying embers.

He never dared dream that the other man would once more offer him a heart full of sincerity, a fire that could set the world ablaze.]
