Listening to the Wind in Western Yunnan

[Blurb]

The night he records his retirement announcement, Chu Di puts an end to the chaos, tosses his phone aside, and decides he doesn't care what happens. He buys a plane ticket to Kunming, then takes a train beneath a glittering starry sky and makes his way to Lijiang.

In an alley, he smashes the guitar on his back. The case splinters and the strings snap, letting out one last mournful cry in the midnight breeze of the highlands.

The sheet music blows away with the cigarette ash and lands at the toe of a pair of leather boots.

The toe shifts slightly, tapping out a slow rhythm on the wooden floor.

The melody pours forth, bright and lively on a ukulele.

Chu Di looks up.

By the wooden door of the Tibetan-style inn, a man in a denim jacket sits by the warm fire, his jacket open and his hair dancing in the breeze.

His dark, ink-black gaze rests on the sheet music on the floor. Long fingers casually pluck the strings, and one sleeve is rolled up to reveal a graceful, well-defined forearm.

When the song ends, the man's lips curl into a languid smile, and his voice is low and warm.

“What a terrible song.”

Chu Di completely loses it, rolls up his sleeves, and charges at him. “I'm gonna fight you!”

As Chu Di throws his punch, he has no idea that this arrogant, sharp-tongued, insufferable innkeeper will become his musical partner, collaborator, and mentor...

And his boyfriend.
