Don't You Dare Doubt It

Some say the Cui family's illegitimate son is an illegitimate child born at an inauspicious hour, unfit to be seen in public. No wonder the Cui family never says a word about him.

Others say the Cui family's illegitimate son has some sort of supernatural gift. Someone saw him speaking to the dead and even helping them seek justice.

Rumors grow more outlandish with every retelling. They've been swirling for over twenty years, and now some call him a living judge of the dead, others a little King of Hell, and still others say he can communicate with the underworld.

Xie Chongyang of Fengcheng's Major Crimes Unit says this man is just a brilliant charlatan who likes to put on a spooky act. He may mean no harm, but the Major Crimes Unit stands firmly against superstition. He hopes the public will trust the police and not get swindled.

When this reached the ears of Cui Renwang, the other person involved, Fengcheng's Major Crimes Unit received a brand-new banner the next day. It had three large characters embroidered on it: "Not Superstitious."

Xie Chongyang: ...That's a compliment, right?

Not long after, Xie Chongyang was promoted and transferred to the legendary secret department, the Quantum Mechanics Technology Department.

Apart from a few colleagues whose eye bags were bigger than their eyes, who were always burning paper money in the office, and one who carried a peachwood sword in his left hand and a Taoist priest's certificate in his right, everything else was fine. They could investigate cases, and they had plenty of freedom.

The only issue was that he kept running into Cui Renwang more and more often.

"Nothing in this world happens without anyone knowing. It only happens without anyone realizing."

Upright, science-believing Captain Xie x half-buried, spirit-summoning, ghost-questioning Master Cui

Reading notes:

1. Xie is the top and Cui the bottom. Please check the roles and respect everyone's preferences. Thank you =3=

2. A genuinely supernatural story. Master Cui really is a master of the supernatural, and Captain Xie genuinely refuses to believe in it.

3. It's the Quantum Mechanics Technology Department, so of course this is an alternate universe. My own take on a mystery story, with tons of original worldbuilding.

Theme: The truth will always come to light.
