The General's Second Wife

Back then, the Marquis of Weiyuan’s household married off a daughter from a collateral branch to a stablehand-turned-general in order to recruit talented people.

The man, born a stablehand, fought his way up to become a powerful regional official. When the Marquis of Weiyuan’s household wanted a share of his power, the concubine-born daughter had already died.

When they tried to arrange another marriage alliance, the Marquis’s household could no longer dictate who would marry whom as they had before.

They could praise and promote the daughters of every branch of the family as eloquently as they liked, but the man said, “I want no one but the legitimate daughter of the Fourth Branch.”

People had always said that when an elder sister died, her younger sister would take her place as the new wife. Shao Zhen had thought she would spend her whole life at home as a sickly invalid. She never expected her family to send her off to take the place of a clan cousin’s wife.
