[Ruffian bandit x compassionate little bodhisattva]
Shi Yinzhu was an orphan raised by the nuns of Hanlu Mountain. She had devoted herself to Buddhism since childhood, and spent decades practicing as a lay disciple under Master Hu Qing, waiting for the year she came of age to answer the Three Questions Before the Buddha and formally enter the Buddhist order.
The year before she came of age, Shi Yinzhu was gathering herbs in the back mountains when she rescued an injured man. She settled him in a thatched hut and tended to him with great care.
She didn't know he was a bandit, a wretch who repaid kindness with betrayal. As she cared for him day after day, he grew lustful and vowed to drag this pure little bodhisattva down from her altar.
When Xue Xian first met Shi Yinzhu, she was a little bodhisattva revered by all, while he was a useless, gravely wounded man, a rat in the streets who couldn't show his face in the light.
They were worlds apart. Even the wicked thoughts festering in the dark corners of his heart were accompanied by a sense of shame and unworthiness.
The more inferior he felt, the more he longed to see her fall from the clouds one day, to see the one who was spotless become tainted by worldly desires just like him.
Later, the land changed, and he became the ruler of a mountain, a powerful lord who protected the surrounding region. He thought he was finally worthy of showing off before the spotless bodhisattva.
He led his men in abducting her and bringing her back to his lair. He had her dressed in a phoenix crown and bridal robes, and lit red candles across the mountain, grand and magnificent, utterly triumphant. He wanted to see shock and admiration in her eyes.
But Shi Yinzhu's eyes remained calm and dispassionate, crushing his pride to dust.
Xue Xian grabbed her cheeks and gritted his teeth:
"Little bodhisattva, why keep company with the Buddha and his lamp? Saving all living beings is much too hard. Why not start by saving me?"
