When the Universally Hated One Turned into a Mushroom

Jiyu is a cardiac surgeon. At twenty-six, he has a bright future ahead of him, but a marriage contract forces him to resign and binds him to Fu Hengsheng.

Fu Hengsheng doesn't love him. He simply thinks Jiyu is obedient and would make the perfect wife for the head of the Fu family.

Jiyu tries everything to reclaim his identity as a doctor, only to be slandered by a senior fellow student from his own medical lineage, who accuses him of sexually harassing a patient. The hospital tells him to leave.

Later, his family arranges an "accident" that injures his hand. The nerves never regain their former sensitivity, and once it's clear he has no hope of returning to work, he gives up.

He resigns himself to being the most meek and unassuming outsider in the Fu family.

In front of the old madam, he is a mute who pours tea and waits on her. He turns a deaf ear as his husband's scandals make the entertainment news every day.

His husband's brothers treat him like an easy target, mocking him and keeping the women and children of the family away from him.

Then one day, Jiyu discovers that the mushroom he was raising has died.

After that, strange stories begin circulating in the Fu family about their young madam.

When it rains, he searches for the softest patch of earth and buries himself in it.

Even under a roof, he looks for a cold, damp place to stay.

One day, Jiyu tells someone, "I'm going to die by self-digestion."

"What? What... is self-digestion?"

"The growth of my mushroom buds has been suppressed by the temperature. Their nutrients can only flow backward. Without nutrients or water, my mushroom buds will undergo autolysis, and I'll die."

Fu Hengsheng freezes, staring at his wife, gaunt and utterly bereft. "No. My... little mushroom won't die."

Everyone realizes that Jiyu thinks he's a mushroom. But they also realize Fu Hengsheng isn't quite right in the head, either.

Fu Hengsheng finds a mushroom expert and buys a whole stack of books: Edible Mushroom Cultivation, Edible Mushroom Cultivation and Pest Control, and Practical New Techniques for High-Efficiency Mushroom Cultivation. He tells Jiyu:

"I'll take good care of you."

A story of redemption.
