He cannot see the living, but he can see ghosts. One day, words from [It] began appearing on his retinas, guiding him to join a show called The Metaphysical Reality Show [1. Follow the written instructions, or you will die a horrible death.] [2. The next instance is about to begin. You can survive only by finding the answer [It] wants.] [3. When the show airs, [Its] edited version is the one that counts.] [4. [It] has sole authority over the interpretation of all the rules.] … The production team assembled a tour group of metaphysical experts and took them to terrifying places to explore in person. Ancient villages in Nanyang; a puppet-theater troupe in southern Fujian; an uninhabited region of Tibet… The eerie tales and strange legends attached to these places all came true, as if the world had been opened up to reveal another indescribable dimension. Shen Mingzhu was handsome, pale, frail-looking, and blind, so at first the production team cast him as eye candy, hoping his looks would attract viewers. Later, their “eye candy” became the backbone of the team. He had to save the show from the brink of cancellation due to lack of funds, while leading his teammates to slay any god or Buddha in their way. As Shen Mingzhu gathered evil spirits and monsters along the way under his command and solved one mystery after another, one day he saw an eye in the sky. It was an eye gazing at him from the future! [Warning 1: Stay lucid. Don’t go mad!] [Warning 2: Stay lucid. Don’t go mad!] [Warning 3: Stay lucid. Don’t go mad!] These were the three warnings Shen Mingzhu received in a row. In the end, he realized he had gone mad long ago. Never look directly into a god’s eyes. But I insist on looking up at the sky! · Shen Mingzhu feels as though he lives in a world turned upside down To him, ordinary people, animals, flowers, and plants are all writhing black shadows, steeped in death; The spirits and ghosts invisible to ordinary people, by contrast, have color and breathe, seeming so vivid and alive… Only later does he understand that the places where the dead, evil spirits, and monsters feared by the world gather are where fate has led him. “Xiao Zhu, come home with me.” (Extra Scene 1) “Xiao Zhu, would you marry me? “Shall we go register today?” Shen Mingzhu heard this, calculated the omens on his fingers, and firmly refused, giving three reasons: “First, the Liu Ren divination falls into the Void, an ill omen.” “Second, my element is Earth and yours is Wood. You overcome me.” “Third, the almanac says today is unfavorable for everything.” Hearing this, Shan Shi spun his compass, and the heavenly stems and earthly branches shifted. “The Void has turned into Swift Joy. When it comes to marriage, the sooner the better. “I’ve changed the feng shui formation at home. From now on, I’ll turn my Wood into Fire, and Fire generates Earth. I’ll only bring you good fortune, never overcome you. Finally, take another look at the almanac.” Shen Mingzhu frowned and opened the almanac. The words on it had changed to: [Today is an auspicious day for marriage.] Shen Mingzhu: “…” (Extra Scene 2) Shen Mingzhu was not born blind. He still remembered the day, long ago, when he opened his eyes and all color disappeared. The world became a blur of shadows, light and dark. Not long afterward, a tall, slender, ghostly silhouette approached through the pitch-black world. It was like a shadow, an optical illusion, or a hallucination. That person seemed to be the indescribable itself, so powerful that nothing could shake him. He said to Shen Mingzhu: “I took your eyes. One day, I’ll return them to you.” From then on, your eyes will no longer see the ordinary world. You will be able to see me. [Reader’s Guide] 1.
