Ji Chi was dumped ten years ago, right when he was ready to risk everything and run away with his lover. For the next ten years, he worked tirelessly to build a business from scratch, thinking all the while that one day he would make Shu Mingyan regret ever leaving him.
Ten years later, he really did see Shu Mingyan again, in a run-down village. This time, Ji Chi was a CEO presiding over a business empire, while Shu Mingyan stood before him in shabby clothes, hoping he would donate money to build a bridge.
Seeing the man's cramped room, worn-out clothes, and empty home save for a dog, Ji Chi sneered:
“Shu Mingyan, do you think the way you've ended up today is punishment for betraying our relationship back then?”
The man before him was deathly pale and so thin he seemed like a bamboo stalk, as though the slightest breeze could topple him.
“Then I suppose it is, President Ji.”
“If you want me to approve the funding, you'll have to work as my assistant. The lowest-level kind.”
“Fine.”
Ji Chi spent three months taking revenge on Shu Mingyan for betraying him. After three months, Shu Mingyan's body reached its limit, and he chose to leave. Then the truth of what had happened all those years ago came out: Shu Mingyan had given up a chance to return to the city and teach so Ji Chi could get the money he needed to start his business. To keep his parents' graves from being removed from the ancestral cemetery, he had agreed to the clan leader's demand that he leave the village. That departure had lasted ten years.
When they met again, Shu Mingyan was gravely ill and barely holding on. Ji Chi lay by his bedside like an abandoned dog:
“Shu Mingyan, give me one more chance. Can we start over?”
Shu Mingyan had no hope left and didn't want Ji Chi to watch him die:
“You asked me last time if we could start over. I'm sorry, Ji Chi, but I don't want to start over.”
Ji Chi knew that if Shu Mingyan agreed, he would truly face death without a second thought.
Shu Mingyan: “We're not the same kind of person. I only want to go back to the village and keep chickens and dogs for company.”
Ji Chi made a call, ready to sell his shares in the Ji Group. His eyes were bloodshot:
“Don't you want to go back? Fine, I'll go with you. I'll set up a chicken farm in the village and raise ten thousand chickens, so you can raise as many as you want.”
“Ji Chi, why are you still so childish?”
“Shu Mingyan, you know it's easy to give up on life. I've booked us a double grave at Jiulong Mountain. We can raise chickens there, too.”
From then on, whenever Shu Mingyan showed even the slightest inclination to give up, Ji Chi threatened him with their chicken-raising double grave at Jiulong Mountain.
Shu Mingyan: “Who taught you to threaten to kill yourself? Get lost...”
Note:
1. The characters switch roles. The story is non-explicit, so avoid it if that's not your thing.
2. The story includes flashbacks to events from ten years ago.
My next novel is now underway. Please check out A Guide to Surviving as a Surgeon in the Prince's Household
A powerful, battle-worn prince gong & a decisive, life-loving, slightly goofy surgeon shou
After working his way up for seven or eight years, Ning Jiu finally became head of surgery. Then he drank a bottle of fake Maotai, opened his eyes, and found himself transmigrated into Ning Jiu, the abandoned son of a marquis who was cursed to bring misfortune to his family. On his very first day, an imperial decree ordered him to marry Yan Yunzhou, the Prince of Flames.
Yan Yunzhou was a living King of Hell, commander of the 120,000-strong Northern Border Army. For fifteen years, he had guarded the border despite his frail health. Yet everyone in the court was waiting for him to die.
The emperor in the palace was waiting to reclaim his military power after his death. The court officials would not send provisions to the Northern Border until he was dead. Even his younger brother, whom he had doted on since childhood, joined forces with the emperor to make an attempt on his life while he was seriously ill:
“There are plenty of princes with different surnames who helped found this dynasty, but you're the only one who refuses to relinquish your military power. The Yan family is in this state because of you. Once you're dead, His Majesty has promised that the Prince of Flames' household will remain as it is, and everyone here can enjoy a life of wealth and comfort.”
The imperial decree ordering this marriage made the emperor's intentions obvious: they were counting on Ning Jiu to bring about Yan Yunzhou's death as soon as he entered the household.
Ning Jiu's blood pressure shot straight to 180. They were throwing him into a deadly situation right off the bat, making a walking bad omen marry a half-dead King of Hell. They might as well just take his life now. His only hope was that his years of medical study would let him keep the prince alive a while longer, so he could eke out a little more time himself.
On their wedding day, he performed the ceremony with a rooster. It wasn't until evening that he saw the Prince of Flames. Despite his frail body, one cough bringing blood to his fingertips, and the fact that he was barely alive, he still radiated the air of a battle-hardened commander:
“Go stay in the next room. You can decide what to do once I'm dead.”
Decide what to do? Was he planning to make him join him in the grave?
“Your Highness's bed is big enough. How about giving me half?”
He needed to see whether there was still hope for him.
Yan Yunzhou found the marquis's son who had married him to bring him bad luck quite interesting. Usually, the man was cautious, afraid of death, and obediently mild-mannered, but after a few drinks, it was as if he became someone else:
“You're so pitiful. You can't even let yourself show that you're sad.”
“Come on, bottoms up! A good drunk can drown a thousand sorrows.”
“Be good and show me your wound. I'll make sure you live for decades more.”
Ning Jiu used every skill he had to keep Yan Yunzhou alive.
No antibiotics? He made allicin himself.
No alcohol? He brought advanced distillation techniques with him.
Don't ask. Everything was in the name of staying alive...
Theme: A beautiful relationship can help both people heal.
