Shen Yi is an associate chief of obstetrics and gynecology. After grinding himself to the bone to earn his doctorate, his entire life consists of endless overtime, endless surgeries, patients who never answer the question asked, and family members who are experts at shirking responsibility and all happen to be taekwondo black belts. Every day, his mind teeters between going to the psychiatric department and trying to deal with it himself...
At last, after a vicious incident involving a patient’s family attacking medical staff, he was placed on protective leave. Without a second thought, he grabbed his suitcase and hid away in a scenic little town.
Everything about the town was great, except for its underdeveloped food delivery scene. This seriously threatened Director Shen’s survival. Whenever he faced a life-or-death choice between instant noodles and a self-heating hot pot, an irresistible aroma of home cooking would waft from next door.
After swallowing his saliva for three days, he knocked on the neighbor’s door, hoping to pay for meals and save his own skin. Just as he struggled to ask, he heard a cool, pleasant voice say:
"Want to mooch a meal?"
Shen Yi nodded shamelessly.
"I can pay for groceries."
"No need. Just do the dishes."
"Deal."
Director Shen discovered that if he kept liking dishes on short-video apps, those dishes would appear on the table the next day. In his eyes, Jiang Yan was practically on par with a living savior.
Shen Yi was in a good mood when he ate well, and he was excellent at making people feel appreciated.
"Hey, your knife skills are amazing. I never asked what you do for a living."
"I prepare bodies at a funeral home."
Shen Yi...
"What about you?"
"Me? I transport bodies at the hospital morgue. Seems like we have a lot in common."
Jiang Yan lowered his head and said nothing.
As it happened, someone in town had died in a car accident and needed to be laid to rest. The local old man who handled funerals was away, and the only other person who did the job was an amateur, too afraid to handle someone who had died violently. After asking around, they found their way to the little courtyard.
Jiang Yan set down the fish in his hands and glanced at Shen Yi, who was on his fifth straight loss on the sofa.
"Body transporter, are you going, or am I?"
Shen Yi’s mouth twitched. The man gave him a faintly amused look, took off his apron, and strode out of the house. Shen Yi followed right behind him.
He watched the man who spent every day looking like a househusband deftly unzip the body bag, put the body back together, stitch it up, arrange the deceased’s appearance, and even apply a pretty decent bit of makeup.
During a drunken heart-to-heart, Shen Yi slurred out:
"I have to confess. I don't transport bodies. I make them. I'm a doctor."
Drunk, Director Shen clung to him and poured out his woes:
"I'm telling you, when it comes to making money, OB-GYN can't compare to orthopedics. When it comes to difficulty, OB-GYN can't compare to cardiac surgery. But as for bizarre ethical dramas and mind-blowing plot twists, every other department put together can't hold a candle to ours..."
Director Shen spent half the night telling him one medical drama after another. As he talked, dawn broke, and the place was a complete mess. Great, he'd become part of an ethical drama himself...
Shen Yi remembered how he'd gotten drunk the night before and put his hands all over Jiang Yan. The touching was one thing, but how had he ended up giving himself to him, too?
Reading Guide:
1. The top was attracted to the bottom before they met, but the bottom didn't know the top.
2. I'll do my best to check the literature, but the author's knowledge is limited. I ask knowledgeable readers to be kind. *Bows*
3. A light comedy with no angst throughout. Read without worry.
My next novel will be this historical danmei, The Regent's Powerful Official Wife.
Yin Huaian, the youngest researcher at a nuclear energy research institute, had just been promoted to deputy director when a bottle of fake liquor sent him straight to a prison in the Great Liang dynasty. He opened his eyes to a bucket of cold water being thrown over him, while someone gripped his hair and demanded the design for a new type of firearm. What the heck???
His cellmate was a wounded general imprisoned for defying an imperial edict. From experience, Yin Huaian figured that a prison guard who came in person to bring him medicine had to be an important figure. If he wanted to get out, he had to latch onto that powerful man first. So he eagerly helped bandage him and struck up a conversation, hoping that if the man ever broke out, he'd take him along.
As it turned out, he had picked the right person to cling to. That very night, the prison was blown open, and a group of people rushed in and knelt before the big shot in the next cell. Yin Huaian gripped the man's sleeve tightly, his eyes full of unspoken yearning.
Sure enough, he was smuggled out. That night, there was a jailbreak, a palace coup, and a brawl. He watched the man who had shared his cell and depended on him for survival just two days earlier place the Empress Dowager under house arrest, suppress the powerful in-laws, ascend to the regency, and execute on the spot a minister who had demanded territorial concessions and reparations for the foreigners.
The newly enthroned Regent personally led the army into battle, and Yan Wangchuan took Yin Huaian with him. The reason was, naturally, to make weapons. They were fighting foreigners, after all, so Yin Huaian had no real objections.
He watched Yan Wangchuan, weighed down by injuries and illness, fight to the death without retreating and reclaim lost territory, only to be betrayed by the court again and again. The general returned from a hundred bloody battles, but instead of honors, he was met by the swords of the Imperial Guards of the Nine Gates. Everyone was waiting for Yan Wangchuan to reclaim the land, so they could kill him afterward.
Only then did Yin Huaian realize that defending the borders and fighting on bloody battlefields were no match for supreme imperial power. What a joke. If he couldn't change this era, then he would adapt to it. If Yan Wangchuan couldn't rebel, then Yin Huaian would become the powerful official himself. (The bottom is a ruthless one in this novel.)
To hell with being too powerful for one's own good. Let him shake the throne.
Beneath the Nine Gates, a red-robed rider on a fiery horse.
"Where is Yan Wangchuan? I'll give you one more chance. If you don't answer, start blasting from the east. Even if you have to level the Nine Gates, dig him out for me."
Who says that when the cunning hare dies, the hound is cooked? He was going to outfit this hound in steel armor and keep him alive until the end of his days.
Reading Guide:
A powerful couple. The top is an injured Regent, and the bottom is a ruthless man who rises step by step to become a powerful official.
They both pursue each other and protect one another.
This is the final installment in the Great Liang trilogy. You don't need to read the first two books; it won't affect your enjoyment.
Like The Surgeon’s Guide to Surviving in the Prince’s Household, it splits its focus about evenly between plot and romance.
It's more satisfying than that one, since the world has reached the steam age.
Core message: Master your profession, and you can make your way anywhere.
