[You don't need to know Go to enjoy this. It's a feel-good story for total beginners! Strong female lead! Alternate universe!]
[1]
Chu Yiyi, the youngest world Go champion of the 21st century, transmigrated.
She entered a dynasty where Go was all the rage. Go tournaments mattered more than the imperial exams, Go players outranked officials, and a Go player who passed the exam to become a Go official attracted even more attention than the top scorer in the imperial exams.
At first, Chu Yiyi thought that with Go players enjoying such high status here, this dynasty was perfect for her.
But! She was a woman, and all those privileges were reserved for men.
Her only worth was in embroidering, studying, waiting for a suitable man to marry her, and then giving birth to eight babies at once to reach the pinnacle of life.
Chu Yiyi angrily flipped the table: What was the point of transmigrating here, then? I want to build a career!
Later, she rebelled.
When women were forbidden from playing Go in public, she disguised herself as a man and swept through the Go world.
When women were forbidden from taking Go classes, she started her own private school for girls, admitting only female players.
When women were forbidden from competing in the national Go tournament, she went from an unknown player to the greatest prodigy in everyone's eyes...
[2]
After transmigrating, Chu Yiyi became Chu Huiyue, the youngest daughter of the Chu family. Her father was a minor official newly transferred to the capital, and her mother was the lady of the house, in charge of the household.
There were no concubines vying for favor and no feuding siblings. Chu Yiyi thought her life was going pretty smoothly.
But Heaven always seemed to slap her just when she was feeling most pleased with herself. The body she'd transmigrated into belonged to a famously stupid girl, the sort who'd be sent straight to a psychiatric hospital in modern times.
Chu Yiyi: ...I think this is a terrible start.
*
Women weren't allowed to play Go, and she already had a notoriously bad reputation.
So Chu Yiyi simply decided: Whoever wants this reputation can have it. She didn't.
Then she disguised herself as a man and stormed the Nanliang Go world. She never lost a match or faced an opponent who could beat her.
In just one year, she became every Go player's nightmare. Whenever anyone mentioned him, people trembled with fear as if they'd seen a ghost.
Later, no one knew why, but just as the rising prodigy was about to become a Go Sage, he suddenly retired. No one could find him.
Until one day, a woman in red stepped onto the arena before a crowd of spectators, and everyone went wild...
Bystander A: Isn't that the Chu family's idiot?
Bystander B: Holy... she's that good at Go? Holy... she won?
Bystander C: Lord Chu, that idiot of yours is tearing up the Go world!
"In this rotten dynasty, everyone is numb and selfish. Men and women are born unequal, and the aristocracy treats human life as worthless. I'll bring this dynasty down with my own two hands. I'll stand at the very peak of power and prove that women are not worthless weeds, nor fish trapped in a pond."
[Reader's Guide]
1. The author is terrible at writing synopses. The general idea is a strong female lead in a power fantasy, feel-good story (BG romance!!!! Important!). This is my first time writing an ancient-to-modern transmigration story. It's an alternate universe, really!
2. I'm a casual Go player but am learning, so there may be mistakes. Please let me know in the comments, and I'll take your suggestions and make revisions. Thank you for reading, and let's treat each other with respect.
3. The male lead knows from the start that the heroine is disguised as a man, and knows all of her plans.
4. The actual story might not be as lighthearted as the synopsis!
5. The story follows traditional rules for ancient Go: fixed opening stones and area scoring.
