Getting Rich Through Metaphysics in a Harem Novel

After dying in battle, ghost controller Xiao Juan discovers that he has become the cannon-fodder villain in a beloved protagonist's harem novel. Not only is he saddled with a bunch of awful relatives, but in the end, he's thrown into the sea in a concrete-filled barrel for harassing the protagonist.

After learning the plot, Xiao Juan promptly leaves home with nothing. He plans to return to his old line of work and make a living using his ghost-controlling skills. But the first ghost he summons is a woman who was kidnapped and murdered.

With the ghost's help, he takes down a human trafficking ring that abducts women and children and earns a reward from the police. The process is a little complicated, but he has more or less achieved his original goal. The only problem is, Xiao Juan starts to realize that something seems off about the ghosts he summons.

A stay-at-home mom dismembered by her abusive husband.

A streamer stalked and murdered for turning down a confession.

An office worker dragged into an alley and raped while out for a late-night snack.

A college student tricked into returning to her hometown for a ghost marriage.

A student sexually harassed by a teacher.

Even a cat tortured to death.

As he resolves one case after another, Xiao Juan succeeds in making money and staying away from the plot. But is something not quite right here?

Hey, hey, hey! I'm really not some women's rights champion or animal-rescue hero!

I started this on a whim. In keeping with the original idea, the victims in the story include men, women, and animals, but all the perpetrators are men. If that bothers you, please don't read.

The male lead's name, Xiao Juan, comes from a song called "Xiao Juan." Give it a listen if you're interested.
