[The story itself is not in first person; it is in third person.]
One hundred and eight righteous sects joined forces to suppress the Demon Venerable. From then on, the world enjoyed peace and prosperity, and the Nine Provinces knew tranquility.
But the righteous path always had a nagging worry. After all, the Demon Venerable had been so powerful, so brazen, so invincible, and he hadn't been killed completely. What if he returned one day? The entire righteous path would be wiped out.
My aptitude was poor, so my sect despised me in every way. They said I was no good at swordsmanship and sent me undercover to the Demon Realm. The role they assigned me was to find a mortal, pretend to be married, and preferably have a child to make it more convincing.
Mortals only lived for a few decades, but I still didn't want to ruin someone's life. With two taels of silver, I bought the poor man by the roadside who was holding a sign that read "Sell myself to bury my father" and brought him home.
I said, "Since I bought you, your life belongs to me. From today on, you cook, wash the dishes, make the bed, and earn the money."
The man nodded. "And what do you do?"
I snapped, "Why ask? Just mind your own business."
The man was poor and uneducated, but he was gentle and considerate, and as handsome as a painting.
I decided I could just about put up with him. We made do together for decades, even though he left early and came home late, and never managed to earn any money.
Until decades later, when the man was still young and handsome, with features as beautiful as a painting.
We stared at each other.
My heart twisted in anguish. "Why are you still alive?"
He was utterly bewildered. "Why are you still alive?"
Later, when I was dragged into the Demon Venerable's manor, I finally learned that the cheap man I'd bought for two taels of silver was none other than the Demon Venerable himself.
Dressed in blood-red robes, he smiled seductively with his peach-blossom eyes as candlelight flickered.
He bent down, stroked my cheek, and pressed me onto the bed, murmuring, "I cooked the meals, washed the dishes, and made the bed. I can give you as much money as you want. Where else are you going to go?"
I swallowed. "Give me two taels of silver, and I'll set you free."
He bit my lip. "Too late."
