Lu Zan was handsome, kind, from a good family, and well-liked. On his first day as a transfer student, he hit it off with his classmates. Wherever he went, he was a dazzling little sun.

Jiang Baiyu was cold in both looks and temperament. His name was always at the top of the grade rankings. No one dared bother him, and no one dared get close.

One was the center of everyone's attention, the other a flower on a high peak.

They seemed worlds apart. Even though they were in the same classroom, it felt as if they would never cross paths in their entire lives.

Until one day, Lu Zan took his test paper and sat down beside Jiang Baiyu. Pointing to one of the questions, he asked tentatively:

“Jiang, I can't solve this problem. Could you teach me? I'll treat you to a soda after school.”

Jiang Baiyu glanced at him. “I don't drink soda.”

Lu Zan got turned down, and his friends cheerfully tried to comfort him:

“It's fine, that's just how Jiang Baiyu is. It's only one question. I'll teach you.”

But before he could finish, a ball of paper flew from behind and bounced twice on Lu Zan's desk.

Inside was the solution to a math problem. Lu Zan froze for a moment and turned around, but Jiang Baiyu's seat was already empty.

The cool, quiet boy had left his school uniform draped over the back of his chair and slipped out through the rear door.

Lu Zan turned back, smiling as he changed the subject.

When no one was looking, he carefully smoothed out the paper and tucked it into his book.

Just as no one knew that he had secretly liked Jiang Baiyu for many years.

Ji Yinlan loved sunbathing in the little rooftop shack above the school building. It was warm and quiet, with no one to bother him. Lying there, it felt as if the whole world belonged to him.

But one day, a stranger barged into his world. During lunch break, instead of taking a nap, the guy sat hunched in a corner, memorizing vocabulary words, and insisted on saying them out loud.

Ji Yinlan hadn't planned on getting annoyed with a good student like him, but the guy kept repeating the same word over and over. Lying above him, Ji Yinlan was about to get calluses on his ears from listening.

The word forced its way into Ji Yinlan's brain in the most obnoxious way. At last, he couldn't take it anymore. He rolled over and stuck his head out to look down at the boy below.

“S-e-r-e-n-d-i-p-i-t-y! Serendipity! Dude, you've been repeating one word for ages and still haven't memorized it?! If you're going to disturb my nap, at least switch words now and then!”

“...”

The boy in the corner looked neat and clean, his uniform immaculate. He glanced up at Ji Yinlan but said nothing, silently turning his gaze away and lowering his head. He never said the word aloud again.

The world was peaceful once more. In the fierce summer sunshine and the clamor of cicadas, Ji Yinlan rested his head on his arms and contentedly closed his eyes again.

Below, Xu Zui sat cross-legged. He looked at the physics exercises spread across his lap, hesitated for a long time, then looked up at the little rooftop.

Only a few sparse weeds poked over the edge. The flamboyant boy was nowhere to be seen.

Xu Zui looked away and pulled a blue notebook from beneath his exercises. He wrote down the words he'd spent so long repeating but hadn't dared to say.
