Chasing the Wind

Wen Li was born with asthma. At six, he went to his grandmother’s home in the countryside to recuperate, where he met a happy little boy.

Li Yan Feng was neglected by both his parents. One day, while peeing by the roadside and playing with mud, he accidentally rescued Wen Li during an asthma attack.

Wen Li was sensitive, awkward, and fragile. Li Yan Feng was slow on the uptake, easygoing, and thick-skinned.

The boy had gentle, drooping eyes. He took the young master from the city fishing, catching shrimp, and raiding birds’ nests.

When Wen Li was eight, he returned to the city. That same year, Li Yan Feng lost his last surviving relative.

Like a puppy nobody wanted, he stood by the road, staring blankly.

Wen Li rode a bus alone for three hours and found Li Yan Feng beside a garbage heap.

He took the boy’s grimy hand and brought the little stray home.

Wen Li, his classmate, was gentle and cute, always smiling, with a sweet voice and a kind disposition.

They had dominated the top two spots in their grade for years, competing fiercely on the rankings.

But nobody knew.

They held hands beneath their desks and kissed where no one could see.

The evening breeze brushed past their hair, carrying nothing but sweetness.
