After Fleeing to a Deserted Island

“Zhenzhu, as long as we hand this general over, everyone on the island can live.”

After transmigrating here, Zhenzhu was immediately faced with the choice of becoming a traitor.

The Great Chong army of two hundred thousand had been reduced to barely a hundred survivors. They and the refugees who had fled here were trapped on Nangzhou Island for more than three months, and the island's remaining food was nearly gone.

The defeated general lay gravely wounded on a straw mat, with Zhenzhu caring for him.

Eight households from her village had fled here together. Along with people who had escaped from elsewhere, there were dozens of households in all, plus a bony, emaciated dog.

Why make a moral choice when she could simply keep them fed?

During the drought on the deserted island, she cut bamboo to collect water. When there was nothing to eat, she went digging for seafood in the cracks between the rocks.

She picked coconuts from coconut palms and tapped palm trees for sap. To Zhenzhu, the vast island was full of resources. Whether it flew through the sky, ran through the mountains, or burrowed in the earth, she could find a way to make use of it.

And there was no shortage of seafood: swimming crabs, jellyfish, moon snails, razor clams, and all kinds of other delicacies. Steamed swimming crab, stir-fried moon snails, razor clam vermicelli soup... The islanders and villagers couldn't stop praising the food. Even the general, who had nearly died in battle, gained two pounds under her care!

When the new court offered amnesty, the army all left in a hurry, but the sickly general stayed behind?

And now he says he wants to marry her?

No, no, no. Just because he's handsome doesn't mean she'll fall for him. Men will only slow down her swordplay!

Cooking delicious food and building up the island: aren't those both better than some stinking man?

Later, she watched him turn the hand that once wielded a sword to the butcher's knife, and put his bowstring, once used to kill enemies, to work hunting game. He set aside his pride and stayed with her in their quiet corner of the world. Well, well. Even after they married, she'd still be the one in charge, so she might as well marry him.
