Letters Between Father and Son
While away from the capital, Kangxi wrote to his precious son.
My beloved son, Baocheng:
I have been away from the capital for many days, and I miss you dearly. I can hardly sleep at night. You haven't written to your father for days, and I am uneasy. I order you to write me a letter every day and send along a few old clothes to put my mind at ease!
Baocheng replied:
Wishing Father peace and good health. Your son misses you too. I've picked out a few old clothes and enclosed them with this letter. All is well at home, so please don't worry. Take good care of your health, and... please don't wear out my clothes by touching them too much. I still need to wear them when you return.
Baocheng, privately: Ah, sleeping while hugging Father's dragon robe doesn't seem quite right. Maybe I'll find a few of Father's undershirts to wear instead, to ease how much I miss him~

The Deposed Crown Prince
Before deposing the Crown Prince, Kangxi showed Yinreng the prayer text to be offered to Heaven.
Yinreng said, "My position as Crown Prince was granted by my Imperial Father. If Father wants to depose me, then depose me. Why bother informing Heaven?"
After deposing the Crown Prince, Kangxi could not sleep at night.
He said, "Ever since I placed Baocheng under house arrest, I have been unable to put my mind at ease. Since falling ill, whenever I summon him, I feel my chest lighten."
The eunuch delivering the decree: "Second Prince, His Majesty wishes to see you."
Yinreng: "Hmph. No."

Reader's guide:
1. The characters grow over time. It's not pure wish fulfillment, but it's still pretty satisfying.
2. Some historical research, but most of the plot is the author's own invention.
3. Father and son love and "hate" each other with wild, frenzied intensity.
4. The Crown Prince's romance isn't one-on-one. In keeping with history, there will be a Crown Princess and secondary consorts, but they'll have few scenes and remain in the background.
5. The Crown Prince ascends the throne. He'll be deposed and restored once, but not a second time. For the sake of the plot, some events from the historical second deposition will be included.
6. The timeline doesn't follow history exactly. Everything serves the story, so please don't scrutinize the historical details.
