Working Dog Arc:
At 25, he was a workaholic who kept his distance from women and had a successful career. Then he received the devastating news that a friend had died, leaving his eight-year-old only child with no one to care for him. So he brought the boy to live with him for the time being, planning to find him an excellent adoptive family in a few days.
That night, the workaholic came home to a brightly lit, empty villa. The little boy was afraid of the dark and had turned on every light. When it was time for bed, the boy ran barefoot out of his bedroom and barged into the workaholic's room, insisting on sleeping with an adult.
"Uncle, please don't give me away, okay? I learned ballet. I can dance for you every day." The little boy wiped away his tears. His hair had a slight natural curl, and his face was red from crying. When the adult didn't answer, he hurriedly raised his arms high, went up on tiptoe, and spun around in tears, keeping time for himself with his voice, afraid he wasn't dancing well enough.
The workaholic, who had never been much for feelings, was moved by the child's pitiful look and nodded.
Ten years later, the little boy who used to cry all the time had been spoiled by the workaholic into a pampered darling who had never known hardship. One evening, after dance class, he rushed out of the studio in his ballet shoes, without even changing out of his practice clothes, and eagerly climbed into the car that had come to take him home. The driver was at the wheel while the workaholic made a phone call in English beside him. The pampered darling pouted and wound his soft, slender fingers around the workaholic's tie, coiling it up one loop at a time to get the adult's attention. Before long, he was dissatisfied again, and pressed his ear against the workaholic's to listen to the business deal the mature man was discussing on the phone.
"Stop fooling around." The workaholic patted his lower back, loosened his snug ballet tights, and took off his soft-soled shoes. He had known for a long time that the pampered darling had feelings for him, and six months ago, his own feelings for the boy had changed as well.
But the workaholic decided he would never say anything or bring it into the open. He was afraid he might be doing the wrong thing, and he couldn't bring himself to make a move on his late friend's only child. He feared the pampered darling's feelings for him might not be love, but dependence. He was also afraid the boy depended on him because he had been the only person he had ever grown close to. He had shaped the boy's whole worldview himself; he couldn't take advantage of being right there at hand.
So he decided to send the pampered darling abroad to study, let him see the world, and wait for his feelings to gradually fade.
Stray Dog Arc:
A grubby little kid of unknown origins was raised by a gang of criminals. At five, he was caught stealing.
The person who caught him was a thirteen-year-old delinquent with no parents who had dropped out of school. All he did each day was pick up odd jobs and scrape together enough money to spend the night at an internet cafe. The delinquent never expected anyone to steal the little cash he had, and he was even more surprised when he caught the thief's hand and found it belonged to a child.
The grubby little kid was stubborn. He had bruises from beatings by the gang, but he stared straight into the delinquent's eyes. The delinquent hadn't planned to get involved. He let go of the child's dirty little hand and focused on eating breakfast at the street stall.
Then he heard the grubby kid's stomach growl. The child hadn't left; he was standing beside the delinquent's little table, swallowing hard.
"You haven't eaten?" A tiny bit of compassion stirred in the delinquent.
The grubby kid pressed his lips together and nodded. So the delinquent brought him a little stool, took out the money he'd set aside for a night at the internet cafe, and bought him a bowl of soy milk and a basket of steamed buns.
The grubby kid clutched a meat bun and refused to let go. He swallowed too fast and choked, and it took the delinquent a long time of thumping his back before he could get it down.
From that day on, the grubby kid followed the delinquent and never went back. The delinquent's home was tiny, with a little bed for the two of them to share. After a bath, the grubby kid turned out to be quite a pretty child, though he always choked when he ate, as if he had been hungry for years.
So the delinquent started raising a kid in whatever haphazard way he could, and he no longer had time to go to the internet cafe because he had no money.
All his money went to supporting his family.
He started working two jobs, doing anything he could. The grubby kid was only five, and the delinquent didn't feel safe leaving him at home, so he took him along everywhere. No matter how badly he dressed himself, he always bought clean children's clothes for the boy to wear. In winter, as they rode the bus from one job to the next, the delinquent held the grubby kid in his arms and accidentally fell asleep from exhaustion. The child braced himself, hunched his shoulders, and used his own down jacket as a pillow for the delinquent.
When the delinquent woke up, he wiped away his drool and hurriedly took a preschool English book out of his bag, turning the pages for the grubby kid one by one. He had no education himself, so he hoped the child would do well in school.
When the boy reached school age, the delinquent sold his little apartment and pulled strings to get the boy registered as a local resident. When the delinquent turned eighteen, he immediately learned to drive and used the money he had left to buy a used car, then started working as a driver. He often had the grubby kid, now in elementary school, sit in the passenger seat. The boy wore a school uniform and looked clean and pretty, while the delinquent was still as carefree and scruffy as ever, getting out of the car to smoke a cigarette.
When people asked who the child was, he joked that he had given birth to him.
Ten years later, the grubby kid had become an eighteen-year-old top student, but he was still sharing a bed with the delinquent.
The delinquent was baffled. What exactly had gone wrong with his parenting?
Notes:
* The Working Dog Arc features an older top; the Stray Dog Arc features a younger top. The delinquent is intersex.
* While the pampered darling and the top student are growing up, there is no grooming or intimate behavior, just ordinary care.
* They are not related by blood, and they are not registered in the same household.
Premise: No job is too hard for a brave little doggo.
