I Became My Own Cat

Jiang Yujun, a devoted cat lover, rented an apartment in the suburbs with his cat, Gingerbread.

Every night, strange scraping sounds came from the apartment's ceiling. He put up with them because the rent was cheap.

He never expected Gingerbread to go missing in his first month there.

The next month, he got up for a drink of water in the middle of the night, and someone slit his throat from behind. Then he was gone.

Jiang Yujun thought he'd had a nightmare.

In the dream, someone had cut his throat.

But it had felt so real, so real that he could almost smell the thick, nauseating stench of blood.

Then he woke up.

"Meow." He yawned.

He froze. Where had that cat sound come from?

"Gingerbread! We have a new home!" He looked up and saw a much larger version of himself grinning foolishly as he bent to kiss him, the newly signed rental contract in his hand.
