Thorns and Nightingales

Yu Tingji and Lu Jin first met on the roof of a hospital.

A young man sat by the window, with a tall building right in front of him. His deathly pale face was like the wings of a white butterfly, so fragile that a gust of wind could shatter him.

Yu Tingji stood behind him and held out her hand, coaxing him gently:

"Come down first, okay? I'll catch you."

A strange smile spread across the young man's handsome face, and then he jumped without hesitation.

The fluttering hem of his clothes slipped through Yu Tingji's palm. She couldn't catch him.

At the time, she thought Lu Jin had to be insane.

But she never imagined that one day this lunatic would become her editor.

Lu Jin's life before he turned twenty had been smooth sailing. He got into a prestigious university at seventeen, shot to fame in the cover-song scene at eighteen with his incredible high notes, and formed a band at nineteen. Their debut album broke that year's streaming record, making him the hottest lead singer of the year.

Offers of collaboration from countless record labels came pouring in like snowflakes. Even the industry's top talent agency extended an offer, promising that once he signed, the whole world would know his name.

Just as he thought he would finally have everything he wanted, disaster struck.

After drinking tea handed to him by a bandmate, his voice... disappeared.

Even though he received emergency treatment in time, he could never sing again.

And so the name Lu Jin vanished from public view in less than six months. The few times people mentioned him, it was with regret.

Until five years later, when a song called "Thorns and Nightingales" went viral online after being sung by a young idol.

The names listed as the song's lyricist and composer were unmistakably "Lu Jin."

Once.

In Lu Jin's eyes, Yu Tingji was a nightingale in a gilded cage: perfect and unreal, someone to admire from afar.

In Yu Tingji's eyes, Lu Jin was a patch of thorns. Get too close, and you'd be covered in wounds. He was someone best admired from a distance.

But one day, a rose suddenly bloomed among the thorns.
