Ye Chanyi, the Shadow Assassin ranked number one among assassins, was dead. He died on a stormy night, at the hands of an unknown newcomer.
Word around the martial world had it that Ye Chanyi's swordsmanship was peerless. Whenever he struck, he killed with a single blow, and though blood crossed his blade, it left no trace. That was why he was known as the Traceless Assassin.
The assassination that made his name was the killing of Prince Poduoluo three years ago. Poduoluo was said to have died at his desk in broad daylight. No one knew how Ye Chanyi had appeared, how he had struck, or how he had escaped unharmed.
Only one maid survived by sheer luck. She claimed to have seen him draw his sword and seen his true face, insisting that the Traceless Assassin was a woman.
No one took her seriously. They all questioned how such a formidable assassin could be a woman. The maid must have been terrified out of her wits, or seen things in a panic... No one believed her.
In any case, after Ye Chanyi's death, countless people mourned. They lamented never seeing his peerless swordsmanship, his dying so young, and most of all, never seeing him fight Ji Chenbi, the swordsman ranked number one.
Everyone laughed at Ji Chenbi. If Ye Chanyi had not become an assassin, the title of the martial world's greatest swordsman might never have gone to him.
Another rumor claimed that when Ji Chenbi heard the news, he flew into a rage and swore to find Ye Chanyi's body and whip it, to soothe the hatred in his heart.
Half a year later, in an unknown little town, at a neglected teahouse.
A strikingly beautiful woman in plain clothes was serving tea to a guest who had come from afar.
But this guest was terribly rude. She had kindly invited him to tea, and he had pointed his longsword at her.
Ji Chenbi ground his teeth.
"Ye Chanyi! How dare you fake your death and deceive me!"
Ye Chanyi looked at the hole in the iron teapot in her hand, where water was leaking out, and repeatedly denied it.
"No, no, no. Heaven is my witness. I, Ye Chanyi, never lie."
Ji Chenbi's face darkened further.
"Then tell me, who was it that said they would never betray me, there in bed that night?!"
