At sunrise, Hoshimi. A disastrous transmigration, the disastrous loss of both parents, and a disastrous awakened technique: a strange ability that lets him communicate with the dead and, once they acknowledge him, gain the skills they were best at in life.
The worst part is that he ended up in Beika Town, nicknamed Little Gotham. And across the world, jujutsu sorcerers are fighting, ability users are fighting, yokai are fighting, and the Kings sometimes drop a sword from the sky. It may not be the end of the world, but the casualties are staggering.
Here's a dark joke: this world was practically tailor-made for his ability. The problem is that nearly every rational soul has gone to hell, while the vast majority of spirits still lingering in this world can't communicate.
And the few rational souls who do remain tend to grant all sorts of bizarre skills, none of which can really stand up to this world's strange power systems.
Worse still, his parents seem to have gotten involved in some shady organization known for its liquor while they were alive. They've learned that he's still alive and are about to come knocking to collect their debt.
Hoshimi: ...Uh-oh.
Oh heavens, why would you do this to me? You gave me hope, only to give me despair!
Just as he was wondering whether he should start over, he made an astonishing discovery: if a spirit acknowledged him, he could form a contract with it and use cursed energy to turn it into an animal.
And the little animals would retain all their abilities from life! Every last one!
Hoshimi, realizing what his technique could really do, couldn't hold back his tears!
A bootleg Ten Shadows Technique, huh? I get it! I'm going to be an animal trainer, no matter what!
Hoshimi clenched his fist!
But unfortunately, none of the ones willing to follow him were any good.
--
First, there was the black-haired fox with narrow eyes, who took Hoshimi in when he was homeless, all because of his ability.
-- As his former guardian, he gives useless Hoshimi a mysterious smile every single day.
Next was a huge black wolf with green eyes and a scar at the corner of his mouth. The big fox had casually dragged him in to serve as a bodyguard. He looked imposing and dashing! At first glance, he seemed incredibly dependable!
-- In reality, he's a complete lazybones or drunkard! He's useless for anything besides being a footrest! I must be the world's biggest fool for being taken in by his good looks!
Then there were a cockatoo and a kitty found at a crime scene, the only two decent souls in the group.
-- The problem is that one specializes in dismantling dangerous objects, and the other is great at sending people flying from a hundred meters away. They seem pretty useful, but then you consider their short, fluffy little bodies...
Hoshimi: ...
Maybe I should just start over after all!
