Jiang Wan was born with immortal bones and taken in as a disciple by Chenyu Mountain. No matter how hard she tried, however, she always remained one step away from ascending to immortality. Her master cast a divination for her and said she should do more good deeds and build up her good karma.
After much deliberation, Jiang Wan chose the discarded crown prince of the mortal realm.
According to the Book of Fate, the abandoned prince was now down on his luck, but one day he would reclaim the throne, ascend to the highest seat, and attain boundless status.
Surely helping the true Son of Heaven would earn her more good karma than helping an ordinary person.
Full of confidence, Jiang Wan went to the mortal realm.
The first time they met,
the discarded crown prince was eating husks in the Cold Palace and suffering abuse. Jiang Wan became a palace maid at his side, caring for him and keeping him company.
Later, the prince was reinstated and moved into the Eastern Palace.
Jiang Wan said goodbye to him. "Don't be sad. Whenever you're in trouble, I'll still come help you."
The second time was in a military camp. The prince was trapped in a besieged city, and the emperor refused to send reinforcements. Jiang Wan became his strategist, devising plans and fighting alongside him.
With the siege lifted, Jiang Wan was ready to leave.
As they parted, the man grabbed her wrist, his expression seeming both obsessive and pleading.
"Are you leaving again?"
Jiang Wan looked at the redness in his eyes and hesitated, but in the end she wrenched her hand free.
"I'm going to become a fairy in heaven. You should be a good emperor, too."
The last time was in a dimly lit palace chamber.
Jiang Wan looked around but saw no danger. She raised her head and asked the new emperor on the throne, "You're already emperor. What trouble could you possibly have?"
The new emperor smiled faintly.
He descended at an unhurried pace, stopping beside the girl. Then he took Jiang Wan's wrist again and slowly rubbed it, his voice hoarse. "Wanwan, I'm still missing an empress."
Jiang Wan was stunned. Just as she tried to break free and fly away, she realized her whole body had gone weak.
"The incense burning here is Drunken Immortal Soul. Even an immortal who smells it will lose all strength. The beams are made of Immortal-Sinking Wood, which suppresses magical powers. And these hanging curtains are spirit silk. You know spirit silk, don't you? I hear the Immortal-Binding Rope is made from it."
The man spoke leisurely, but his voice held a trace of repressed madness.
"Don't become an immortal. Be my empress instead."
Jiang Wan stared at the man before her in disbelief.
He really was insane.
He actually intended to imprison an immortal.
