Qi Liang has a huge fight with his wife.
They married young, and have made their way through three bumpy years together. Qi Liang considers himself one of the few virtuous husbands in the capital.
His wife occasionally behaves strangely and says odd things, but he puts up with it. She doesn't want him to take concubines, so he is perfectly content to leave his rear courtyard empty.
Recently, however, the Empress Dowager has given him two noble concubines on the grounds that his wife has yet to bear him a child. He doesn't want to defy her, so he takes the two women into his household, thinking that if his wife dislikes it, he can simply leave them alone.
He never expected his wife to start a huge fight with him anyway.
Furious, Qi Liang speaks without thinking.
"I took these two concubines. What are you going to do about it?"
In that moment, he sees pain and sorrow filling his wife's usually cool eyes.
Qi Liang feels uneasy, but as a prince, he is too proud to lower himself and apologize to smooth things over.
Then, unexpectedly, assassins attack, and their carriage plunges off a cliff.
When Qi Liang opens his eyes again, he finds himself in a strange world.
There is no royal family here. People are all equal, regardless of status. Towering buildings reach into the clouds, and "iron boxes" speed along the roads.
Most importantly...
His wife.
She's wearing clothes unlike any he has ever seen. Her skirt is very short, and her long, straight, pale legs are fully exposed.
Qi Liang is displeased, but he can't do anything about it.
All he can do is watch as his wife starts going out to work and socializing. She goes to drinking parties and dinners, and even has strange men put their arms around her shoulders and walk her home.
Qi Liang can't take it anymore. He clenches his fist and swings it at the man.
But to his surprise, his wife steps in front of him.
"What are you doing? This is my new boyfriend."
After spending some time in this strange world, Qi Liang has figured out what "boyfriend" means. His eyes turn bloodshot with rage, and he trembles all over. "Then what am I?"
He hears his wife give a cold laugh.
"You? You're my ex-husband."
