Going VIP on February 27. Thank you, everyone!

+ When Zong Yuan was a little over five, his father remarried. His new stepfamily included a brother six years older than him. Zong Yuan hated them. He didn’t dare mess with the older one, so he picked on the younger one instead, hiding his homework, phone, and clothes in his little suitcase every day. As he hid them, he’d huff, “Go on, cry!”

Su Tingzhou didn’t cry, of course. To him, Zong Yuan was just a kid, and he didn’t take him seriously. But having his things go missing every day was annoying. One day, in a bad mood, he pinned the kid to the bed, half serious and half joking, and lowered his voice to scare him. “Bother me again and I’ll beat you to death.”

Zong Yuan was terrified and burst into tears. The kid was so adorable, like a little porcelain doll, and even more heartbreaking when he cried. Su Tingzhou hadn’t expected to scare him into tears, so he hurried to comfort him. “Don’t cry. I’m just teasing you. You’re the one who keeps hiding my stuff.”

“Your name is Zong Yuan, like zongzi, and my name is Su Tingzhou, with ‘zhou’ meaning boat. Our names are both connected to the Dragon Boat Festival, so we’re on the same team, right?” Su Tingzhou mumbled around a lollipop as he sweet-talked the kid, making it sound completely convincing.

Su Tingzhou sat on the steps, holding a colorful candy wrapper between his fingers. “Yeah. If you like her, go for it.”

His friend couldn’t understand. “But why?”

Su Tingzhou put away the wrapper and lowered his eyes. “I promised him. I have to keep at least one promise.”
