Daily Life at the Prince's Manor Crematorium

Everyone in the capital knew that Prince Zhuang had a favored concubine, gentle and considerate, with a bewitching charm.

Prince Zhuang doted on her, cherishing her so much that he was afraid she might fall if he held her in his hands, or melt if he kept her in his mouth.

People around him once teased, "When you marry a princess consort one day, you'll probably treat her no better than this."

Prince Zhuang didn't take it to heart. "Jin Niang was bestowed on me by the Emperor. If I neglect her, it will reflect badly on my imperial brother. Her status is lowly. How could she be compared with the princess consort?"

Later, Prince Zhuang was to choose his principal consort. The Empress Dowager, the Empress, and the family of his future consort took turns warning Su Jinniang not to presume on her beauty and favor and develop ambitions she had no right to entertain. Su Jinniang smiled and agreed.

Not long afterward, Su Jinniang saved the Emperor during an accident. When he asked what reward she wanted, he made it clear that he would grant her anything except the position of Prince Zhuang's principal consort. Everyone thought she would ask to be named a secondary consort.

Who could have guessed that, with shining light rippling in her almond-shaped eyes, she would say each word with perfect clarity: "His Highness no longer needs me to serve him. Would Your Majesty allow me to leave and return home in glory?"

[You think my status is lowly, but you don't know that becoming your concubine was never what I wanted]

An emperor's word is law.

For her service in saving the Emperor, Su Jinniang was freed from her status as a servant, granted the title of District Lady, and allowed to return to her hometown.

After Su Jinniang left, Prince Zhuang couldn't eat well or sleep well.

He secretly went to her hometown and saw that Su Jinniang was living comfortably on the "parting gift" he'd given her.

Prince Zhuang was just thinking how much the child in Su Jinniang's arms looked like his when a dashing provincial graduate came in to propose to her, promising to raise her son as his own.

Prince Zhuang was instantly seized with fury. That was his woman, his son!

Su Jinniang: "Why have you come here? Didn't you say my status was too lowly?"

Prince Zhuang: "My status is the lowly one. Before you, I'm lower than the dust."
