Ten Years in Tonghua: The Secret in the Drawer

This isn't a one-sided, years-long secret crush. It's a mutual, unspoken affection that can only be hidden in the light of day.

In the snowbound office of a bitter winter, I work alongside Sister Su. Between case files and manuscripts, day after day, feelings take root that we cannot speak aloud. A metal bookmark etched with fine cracks, a brief moment alone in the sealed archives on the basement level, countless exchanged glances and brushes of our fingertips. Every tenderness and every flutter of the heart is returned.

She has the warmth of her own family life, while I keep to my solitary routine. We draw our boundaries with clear eyes: these feelings belong only to our eight working hours. Gifts stay in the office desk drawer and are never taken home; our affection stays within the confines of the office, and must be tucked away as soon as we leave the building.

We crave those moments in the archives when we don't have to play a role, and lose ourselves in the undisguised tenderness of our gazes, yet we know this relationship has no future. Everything has a crack in it. That's where the light gets in. This light is brief and restrained, shining only in the office daylight.

We are drawn to each other and our feelings are returned, yet we can never openly share a life together.

Theme: A story of restrained, mutual secret affection that explores the boundary between love and reality. Even beautiful feelings can be constrained by reality; we must know where to draw the line and learn to accept regret.
