Smoke City

The protagonist enters an unfamiliar city called Yancheng and gets into a taxi winding through narrow, crooked alleys. Something about every street in the city feels eerie. Cars never honk, pedestrians are rarely seen in the alleys, doors and windows stay shut, and the air is heavy with the damp smell of mold. Here, reality and illusion keep intertwining. The cracks in the walls, the shadows, even the mottled old walls seem to possess a consciousness. A pervasive sense of being watched lurks in every corner. Neighbors never speak plainly, communicating only through silent speculation and mutual testing. Everyone lives trapped in a mental prison woven from their own thoughts and those of others. The protagonist tries to find a way out, only to discover that the streets seem to loop endlessly, and he can't tell whether what he sees is real or an illusion born within his mind. Little by little, the atmosphere of the city envelops him, forcing him to confront the suspicion, loneliness, and mental anguish deep within human nature. There is no clear distinction between good and evil, nor any conventional redemption. The story lays bare the inner distortions and struggles of people in a closed environment, and explores how individuals face losing themselves amid the surrounding chaos. Theme: Explores interpersonal alienation and mental anguish, depicts the inner estrangement of people in an absurd environment, and blurs the boundary between reality and the subconscious.
