[Wen Shumian x Pei Yanchun | Freelance Illustrator x Outdoor Photographer / Volunteer at an Animal Rescue]

“I keep having all these unbelievably fragmented dreams, full of people I’ve never seen and fluffy white shadows.”

Wen Shumian crouches beside a bush to coax out Mianmian, a fluffy Ragdoll cat with its fur standing on end and its claws out. She looks up and finds herself face to face with Pei Yanchun.

Mianmian arches its back and hisses, ready to fight. Beside it, the big white dog Xuetuo eagerly edges forward.

Pei Yanchun grips the leash, shoulders taut, as if struggling to hold something back. He politely apologizes. “He means no harm.”

The instant their eyes meet, countless shadowy images of rainy nights slam into Wen Shumian’s mind.

She speaks in a daze. “Have we met before?”

Then she shakes her head and murmurs, “I’ve probably been staying up too late lately.”

Strange things keep happening after that.

They bump into each other while picking up parcels, taking out the trash, and even when they deliberately leave at different times. At every corner, they still run into each other.

Xu Liyang snatches up her sketches. The pages are covered in blurry white silhouettes. She raises an eyebrow and teases, “Be honest. Have you fallen for the person who walks the big dog?”

Wen Shumian hurriedly covers the drawings. “It’s just sleep trouble making me imagine things.”

At a cafe, Shen Qingxuan stirs her now-cold coffee and looks across the table with quiet composure. “You never used to go out of your way to walk your dog around here.”

Pei Yanchun runs his fingertips around the rim of his coffee cup, silent and unable to deny it.

Fragmented nightmares haunt Wen Shumian night after night, and some inexplicable bond makes her instinctively want to retreat and hide.

A thousand jumbled, fragmented emotions circle Pei Yanchun day and night. Only when he’s with this person and her cat can he find a moment of peace.

Two unspoken secrets weigh heavily on their hearts.

The cat secretly peers downstairs from the windowsill, while the big dog keeps watch outside the apartment building, come rain or shine.

Again and again, they meet without warning. One instinctively dodges, yet can’t help being drawn to the other.

A contemporary urban story with a restrained narrative, full of things left unsaid. Both leads have a mutual crush, but keep retreating and struggling against their feelings.
