Feasting on Bones

The Classic of Mountains and Seas records: North of Kaiming are the flesh of sight, pearl trees, patterned jade trees, yuqi trees, and trees of immortality.

Guo Pu of the Jin dynasties wrote in his commentary: On Mount Yuanqiu grows a tree of immortality. Eat its fruit and live long; there is also a red spring. Drink from it and you will never grow old.

Fang Huai lives by only two rules:

1. Be a layabout who lives off others.

2. Keep your head down and stay out of trouble.

But fate has it in for him. His older brother vanishes without a trace, and Fang Huai is promptly kidnapped by an expedition team made up entirely of villains, then taken to the vast mountains of the southwest to search for the legendary ancient kingdom of Yelang.

On an altar piled with bones, cicada shells are covered in writing no one can decipher.

In ruins buried deep underground, creatures from the Classic of Mountains and Seas roam alive.

And the man in a wheelchair, Chen Zhen, looks at him more dangerously than any monster.

"Your brother stole something he shouldn't have." Chen Zhen pins him against the rock face, his voice low. "So you'll help me find it and bring it back."

Fang Huai thinks that if he can escape alive, it'll all be over.

Two months later, another group kidnaps him and takes him to a boundless grassland, where he sees Chen Zhen again.

This time, Chen Zhen smiles at him. "Don't be afraid. I'm here to rescue you."

But Fang Huai looks at the knife Chen Zhen has pressed to his throat and just wants to curse.

Big brother, does this look convincing to you?!!!
