Secret Tryst on a Spring Night

No one in the Li family liked Li Tang.

The younger daughter, brought back from the countryside, was dull and guileless, naive about the world, bland and clumsy. Whenever they took her out, all she did was embarrass them.

So when the eldest daughter refused to marry into the Shen family, everyone agreed without objection to foisting Li Tang on them instead.

At a banquet, her eldest sister linked arms with her boyfriend and told her with a smile, "Young Master Shen comes from a good family. He's proud and noble, and he wouldn't be interested in you anyway. It's a marriage of convenience. You'll be divorced in six months at most.

Just put up with it. I'll find you an honest civil servant to settle down with afterward."

Li Tang nodded slowly. "Oh."

The year was drawing to a close, and the six months were almost up.

Her eldest sister, busy vacationing abroad, took a moment to send her a text asking how she was. She said she'd found a blind date for her: a high school teacher, five years older than her and twenty-eight this year, with a steady job, no wandering eye, and an honest, caring nature.

She'd even booked a private dining room for them.

She told Li Tang to meet him and see how things went, maybe start dating.

Li Tang replied with a mild okay.

When she arrived at the restaurant and opened the private room door, the man from the photo was nowhere to be seen.

The room was dimly lit. Her contractual husband was sitting on a soft sofa. The noble Young Master Shen wore a casually chosen designer shirt, two buttons undone at the collar, and lounged back lazily.

When he saw her come in, he raised his dark eyes with an air of indifference.

Calls and messages from her eldest sister poured in, frantic with apologies.

In the murky night fog, faint, trembling sobs were muffled and swallowed by the begonias.

The man's face faded into the darkness, indistinct.

His cold fingers gripped her chin tightly, kissing away each trembling tear as it fell, with a chillingly unhealthy tenderness. He slowly met her frightened, shrinking gaze and gave a quiet laugh.

"Shouldn't you ask your husband first before you start dating, sweetheart?"
