Getting Back Together with the Dragon-Proud Man Who Broke Off Our Engagement

[One-on-one romance, mutual secret crushes, reunited after a breakup, supernatural road-trip story]

[False earnestness × genuine smoldering passion]

Lou Miaoqiu's husband was about to die of illness.

At least, that's what everyone thought before Xie Xuanwei came calling.

Lou Miaoqiu thought so too.

After all, her husband had always been weak and sickly, and no matter how much medicine he took, he never seemed to improve.

But Xie Xuanwei folded his arms and smiled. "He's not dying. His tribulation is simply about to end."

He told her that her husband was actually his master, the immortal venerable of Dongzhou's immortal sects, and that the man who had married her was merely his master's mortal-world doppelganger.

After her husband died, he added, "Mortals can't just go to the immortal islands whenever they please, but my master's willing to help you out of consideration for your past ties. If you wish, you can go to the immortal islands and cultivate. But after that, you'll have nothing more to do with him."

Lou Miaoqiu was convinced he had deliberately taken on this task just to laugh at her.

A few years earlier, after all, the two of them had been engaged.

But when he was at his lowest, she had broken off their engagement and humiliated him cruelly.

What he didn't know was that before her husband's death, his esteemed master had told her a secret:

"Miaoqiu, I'm only one immortal bone away from ascending to immortality, and that bone is in Xuanwei."

"I know the two of you share a past. Find a way to take it from him, and I'll make sure you ascend with me."

Not long after they set out, they were attacked by a yao beast.

Xie Xuanwei took a blow meant for her. At the sight of her stunned expression, he merely smiled.

"As his disciple, isn't protecting you on my master's behalf only natural?" He narrowed his eyes and slowly ran his tongue along his lip as he drew out the words, "M-a-s-t-e-r's wife..."

As the journey carried them farther from home and closer to the immortal islands, Lou Miaoqiu slowly came to realize something. Perhaps he hadn't come to laugh at her after all. Perhaps he was...

She looked up, and her gaze met Xie Xuanwei's.

He didn't look away.

Beneath the table, their knees brushed by chance. He made no effort to pull away. Instead, the corner of his eye lifted slightly.

He was seducing her.
