[20th Century] Miss Li Outside the Plot

(Wishing all you darlings great wealth! Please add this to your collection.)

Constance always felt there had to be another way to live, but every morning she woke to the same yellowing, leaking ceiling.

A handsome but frail father, a mother facing racial discrimination, a little sister who still needed to be fed, and her, radiant and peerless.

Unable to trust the sweet talk of well-dressed young men she happened to meet, Connie took a job as a pretty face at a newly opened Broadway theater in the winter of 1910.

At least the money she earned would be honest.

As snow fell thickly on Lunar New Year, she quietly pasted a couplet by the theater's back door.

One side read, "May the dollars roll in," and the other, "May the gold keep coming."

When she turned around, she found a tall, pale, handsome man standing there, snowflakes in his blond hair. He earnestly asked what it meant.

After explaining, Connie watched him warily. To her surprise, he began desperately pulling out banknotes.

"If I don't have dollars or gold, will pounds do?"

Williams was the family's oddball, an outcast among the aristocracy.

He refused mistresses and female companions, and wanted no marriage. He wanted to be a "London-circle Christ child."

His family was at their wits' end. If he weren't their only heir, who would bother with him?

Just then, wealthy Americans came calling and flattering them, and the elders said:

"Take him to see American girls. We don't mind if she's a foreigner."

These rich young men were experienced, and planned to take the future duke to Broadway to broaden his horizons.

Williams scoffed.

But on a brief stroll outside, he saw an angel putting up mysterious red paper.

The instant she turned around,

he could already picture her in a wedding dress.

Characters from works like An American Tragedy, Pride and Prejudice, and Gone with the Wind will appear, along with certain historical events, but the heroine just breezes through the whole world, haha.

Theme: Love life and don't fear hardship.
