After the college entrance exams, Yu Zhao signed up for a seven-day tour with two friends. They were headed to a place called Taoyuan Village.
On the day they checked in, a woman helped them settle in. Her features were clear and pristine, like frost and snow in winter, but her gaze toward Yu Zhao was a little too intense.
On the first night, Yu Zhao woke up hungry and went out to find something to eat. By chance, she stumbled upon something strange in the village.
The lotus flowers she'd seen during the day had withered overnight. The docile sheep stood upright at night and raised their axes. The moon was eerie and deathly pale... Even her room had something strange in it.
The next day, Yu Zhao inexplicably woke up before the village altar. Taoyuan Village worshipped a tree, which the villagers called "the God."
In front of the tree was the vague outline of a human body, and its branches bore thousands upon thousands of human faces, all turning toward her in unison. Terrified, Yu Zhao wanted nothing more than to return to her lodging, grab her friends, and leave, but she got lost in the village.
"Come with me." The mysterious woman appeared and called out to her.
The woman's name was Xun Xueya. She had always lived in the village and told Yu Zhao some of Taoyuan Village's secrets.
Yu Zhao wanted to leave after hearing them, but her friends insisted on staying to enjoy the trip. With no other choice, she had to stick with Xun Xueya.
The two evaded the goat-headed people's pursuit on the third day and the supposed resurrection of "the God" on the fourth. Then, on the fifth day, Yu Zhao began to forget things.
She no longer recognized her friends and forgot that all she wanted was to leave Taoyuan Village. Tilting her head, she asked Xun Xueya, "Have we met before?"
The other woman only smiled and drew her into her arms. Her voice brushed against Yu Zhao's ear as she said, "Don't be afraid. This time, I'll take you away."
And so Yu Zhao closed her eyes.
