Shui Yunyang looks sweet and pretty, but she has a fiery temper. She learned martial arts as a child and knows medicine, too. She can knock someone flat with a single palm strike, or save a life with one dose of medicine.
By an unfortunate twist of fate, she ends up in the imperial palace of Northern Qi as a lowly palace maid, tasked with serving tea and water.
It is an age of chaos within an age of chaos, when human lives are worth less than grass. The Northern Qi imperial family, the Gao clan, are a bunch of beautiful lunatics: every one of them is stunning, and every one of them is crazier than the last.
Simply staying alive here without having her shoulder blades carved out is reason enough to celebrate.
One evening, as night fell, Shui Yunyang was working hard at sweeping the floor when she looked up to wipe her sweat and caught the eye of the Northern Qi emperor.
He thought she looked sweet and easy to bully, and insisted on dragging her off to his bed.
Shui Yunyang pretended to be weak, crying and begging him to let her go, but that damned Gao Yang ignored her. So she grabbed the nearest inkstone and cracked it over his head.
Shui Yunyang grunted, “It's for your head. No need to thank me.”
Gao Yang: “...”
She couldn't stay in the palace any longer. While fleeing the guards searching for her, she ran into a man with a gentle face and a lovely voice.
He smiled and spoke softly: “If you want to live, come with me.”
Shui Yunyang was instantly overcome with dread. She felt even more afraid of this man than of the Northern Qi emperor.
He took a couple of steps, noticed she hadn't moved, and turned back in confusion. “Aren't you coming?”
Shui Yunyang: “Coming!”
She'd escape first and figure out whether he was friend or foe later!
Only after leaving the palace did Shui Yunyang learn that her rescuer was also a member of the Northern Qi imperial family.
He said, “My name is Gao Changgong.”
Shui Yunyang: “...Pleased to meet you.”
Isn't that Prince of Zaozhuang, or rather, Prince of Lanling?
She glanced at Gao Changgong and thought that it was no wonder he wore a terrifying mask in battle. That face was devastatingly, unimaginably handsome!
They say that in the mad Gao clan of Northern Qi, Gao Changgong is the only normal one. Maybe she should work for him. At least she wouldn't have to worry about being treated like a dish of food when she went outside.
Shui Yunyang sheathed her claws, tugged sweetly at his sleeve, and asked in a soft voice, “I know martial arts and medicine. I can fight and treat the sick. Could I stay by your side as a female guard?”
Gao Changgong was surprised. “You know how to treat illnesses?”
Shui Yunyang: “...Um, except madness.”
Later, after spending time with him, Shui Yunyang realized that the Gao clan really were all lunatics. The only reason Gao Changgong seemed relatively normal was that the rest of the Northern Qi imperial family were so depraved.
Who wants to live with lunatics?
So she packed her things and prepared to make a run for it, thinking it would be nice to retire to the mountains and live in seclusion.
But Shui Yunyang couldn't beat a lunatic, and Gao Changgong caught her anyway. He bound her feet in a humiliatingly long, thin chain that jingled with every move.
The handsome man held her slender ankle, his voice gentler than the spring breeze. “Yangyang, since you know medicine, could you help treat my illness?”
Shui Yunyang immediately stopped resisting, terrified, her voice trembling uncontrollably. “W-what illness?”
Gao Changgong gave a low laugh. “Madness.”
