The Good Life in the 1990s

Twelve-year-old Su Leran has been a little worried lately because she keeps having bad dreams and can’t sleep well.

Her girlfriends say she might be starting to get insomnia and go bald, just like adults.

That’s terrifying! How can she wear pretty little dresses if she goes bald? She keeps touching her head every day to make sure it’s still okay.

But that isn’t the point. The point is her dreams.

The dreams are even scarier!!

She dreams that her dad accidentally breaks his leg, then gets into a serious accident.

To pay for his treatment, her mom sells their house, only for it to be demolished a couple of years later. The new owner gets a whole lot of money!

In the dream, she’s just graduated from middle school. She doesn’t go to high school, but instead gets a job at a factory with her girlfriends. Then she works there for the rest of her life, still working in her sixties or seventies.

That’s so tragic!!!

Su Leran figures it might be because she hasn’t been paying attention in class lately and has been obsessed with story magazines.

Having just gotten into a key middle school and started feeling a little full of herself, Su Leran pulls herself together and decides to study hard. She doesn’t want to spend her whole life working in a factory. She wants to go to college and become a big boss someday!

The little girl’s lofty ambitions burn brightly for a full three days.

Just as they’re starting to fizzle out, Su Leran comes home from school one day and discovers...

Her dad really has broken his leg, and his injuries are exactly the same as in her dream!

Su Leran: ??!!!

Something’s wrong! Very wrong!!
