Synopsis

【An introduction to history, a complete history of the Two Jin dynasties, a popular episodic novel, an accessible read about official history, the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms】 If you want to make sense of the confusing history of the Two Jin dynasties and the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms, this popular retelling of the Two Jin period is an excellent introduction. Cai Dongfan uses accessible storytelling to unravel complex historical records, eschewing dry classical textual analysis. Its hundred chapters clearly divide the story into the Western Jin and Eastern Jin periods. The first half describes the Sima clan's replacement of Wei and unification of the realm after the fall of Wu, followed by a rise and fall: the appointment of a foolish crown prince, the disastrous rule of Empress Jia, and the devastating War of the Eight Princes, which drained the Central Plains. The second half recounts the fall of the Central Plains, the southward migration of the aristocracy and the founding of the Eastern Jin, the successive division of the north among five states, the long confrontation between north and south, and such famous events as the Battle of Fei River, where a smaller force defeated a larger one, and Liu Yu's northern campaigns to reclaim the Central Plains. The book weaves in stories of well-known historical figures such as Zhou Chu, Lu Ji, Tao Kan, and Xie An. It covers warfare, court politics, people's livelihoods, and the customs of non-Han peoples. There is no fantasy or fictionalized setting, making it easy for students and history beginners alike to follow. By the end, readers will have a clear grasp of the succession of the Two Jin dynasties and the conflicts among the Five Barbarians.

Historically Accurate, Without Making Things Up

Historical fiction has more room for worldbuilding, with vivid characters and no distortion of history. I want a satisfying read that covers dynasties, major and minor events, wars, and loyal civil and military officials, all presented in a historical setting.
