A Popular History of the Northern and Southern Dynasties

[An Introduction to History, Adapted from Official Histories, Northern and Southern Dynasties Intrigue, Warlords of a Turbulent Age, A Chaptered Novel, Rigorous Historical Detail] The Popular Romance of the Northern and Southern Dynasties is part of Cai Dongfan’s classic series of popular histories, recounting in full the nearly two centuries of turmoil from Liu Yu’s overthrow of the Jin dynasty and founding of the Song to Yang Jian’s unification of north and south. Complete in one hundred chapters, it is written in an accessible blend of classical and vernacular Chinese. In the Southern Dynasties, the Song, Qi, Liang, and Chen took turns usurping the throne and killing emperors. Liu Yu led a northern campaign to reclaim Chang’an, then slaughtered the previous dynasty’s rulers in his later years. Liu Shao murdered his father, Hou Jing besieged the capital, and Chen Baxian founded a state amid the chaos. Palace bloodbaths and aristocratic factionalism followed one after another. In the north, Northern Wei rose to power, Emperor Xiaowen moved the capital and adopted Han customs, then the dynasty split into Eastern Wei and Western Wei. Northern Qi and Northern Zhou fought each other, while the Xia of Helian, Northern Liang, and Northern Yan each took their turn on the stage. Wars between the Hu and Han peoples and the abuses of powerful ministers run throughout the story. The book is built on official histories, with anecdotes and unofficial accounts filling in the details. Its battles are stirring and grand, while palace intrigue and political schemes keep readers on edge. Each chapter includes commentary that examines human nature and the rise and fall of fortunes. There are no wish-fulfillment tropes or fictionalized settings: every person and event is based on historical records. Enjoy it as a novel, or use it to get to grips with the lesser-known history of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, even if you’re new to the subject. Recommended for readers who enjoy political intrigue, ancient warfare, and real history.
